Healthcare furniture manufacturers in China for UK hospital projects include ward and bedside furniture makers, patient and visitor seating factories, upholstered chair specialists, casegoods and joinery workshops and full healthcare furnishing suppliers, and each prices a different scope under the same words “hospital furniture”. A ward refurbishment may need bedside units and overbed tables; a waiting area may need linked seating that can be wiped down and re-covered.
This guide sorts the supply side into five sourcing routes so a procurement team can send one brief to the right makers and compare the answers fairly. It is not a ranking. No factory is named or scored here, and no claim is made about infection control, fire performance, strength or suitability for any NHS or private trust of any product. The trust’s or designer’s specification must define those requirements, and each maker must show evidence for the exact model it offers.
What should a UK hospital furniture brief state?
A brief that says only “hospital chairs, wipe-clean, 200 sets” produces quotations that cannot be compared. State at least the following, tied to the room data sheets or schedule the designer issued.
- Room and item schedule: a schedule by room type and item, with the designer’s item codes, quantities and the drawing numbers they come from.
- Specification source: the trust, framework or designer document that sets the requirement for each item, named in the brief with its edition, so no maker has to guess which rule applies.
- Coverings: the covering type and reference for each upholstered item, with an approved sample and the cleaning regime the trust says it will use.
- Construction: frame material, joint method, seat and back build, and whether covers are fixed or removable for replacement.
- Surfaces and edges: laminate, veneer or solid surface finishes, edge treatment and the sealing details the designer names at joints and junctions.
- Mobility and fixing: castors, glides, wall fixing or floor fixing, with the fixing method stated by the designer.
- Marking and documents: what product marking, test documents and care instructions must arrive with each item.
- Spares and replacement covers: whether spare covers, castors or components are wanted, quoted separately.
Five sourcing routes for healthcare furniture
1. Ward and bedside furniture makers
These makers focus on bedside cabinets, overbed tables, wardrobes and storage units used in patient rooms. Ask about the carcass and top construction, the edge and surface treatment, how drawers and doors are fitted and what hardware is included. Request a section drawing of the top and edge detail, not only a photograph of an installed unit.
2. Patient and visitor seating factories
Seating for waiting areas and wards is judged on frame build, cushion build and how the covering is cleaned and replaced. Ask which frame material and joints each model uses, whether the seat is fixed or removable, and what cleaning agents the covering has been used with. Compare quotations model by model, because a seat that suits a waiting hall may not suit a ward.
3. Upholstered chair and sofa specialists
Some makers focus on upholstered armchairs and day-room seating, often with a choice of high-back and standard options. The covering and foam are the main decisions: ask for the covering reference, the foam description and how the maker controls colour between batches. Our guide to fabric versus vinyl upholstery for commercial seating sets out the questions to ask on coverings.
4. Casegoods and joinery workshops
Workshops that build nurse stations, reception counters, storage walls and built-in units work from drawings rather than catalogues. Ask for shop drawings before production, a finished corner sample for each finish, and a drawing of how units meet walls and floors. Make sure the quotation separates carcass, doors, tops and hardware.
5. Full healthcare furnishing suppliers
Some suppliers offer furniture together with beds, curtains, flooring or other items for a ward or clinic. This route gives one party to deal with, but ask the supplier to show capability for each product group it quotes, because bed frames, upholstery and joinery use different skills. For the medical bed side, see our guide to hospital bed manufacturers.
How to compare healthcare furniture quotations
- What is included: frame, cushions, coverings, hardware, castors and packing, shown in separate columns.
- Item-by-item match: each line tied to an item code on your schedule, so missing items show up.
- Covering reference: the exact covering reference quoted, so a cheaper substitute cannot appear after the order.
- Cleaning information: the cleaning and care instructions the maker supplies for each covering and finish.
- Documents: the test and product documents the maker will provide for each model, listed in the quotation.
- Replacement parts: covers, castors and small parts available later and how they will reach the UK.
- Exclusions and substitutions: any change to material, thickness or components the maker proposes.

UK projects: what changes compared with other markets
A UK healthcare project brings its own documents. The client trust, framework or designer usually issues the requirements for furniture, and those documents are not the same as those used for hotels or offices. Ask the project team which documents apply to each item, and quote them in the enquiry rather than assuming a maker already knows them.
Product marking and fire rules for upholstered furniture in the UK are separate topics. Our guide to UK fire rules for upholstered furniture explains how the rules differ by building type, our guide to FIRA testing covers one test route, and our guide to UKCA versus CE marking covers marking. None of these tells you which rules apply to a hospital item, so ask the designer.
For other markets, see our guides to healthcare and aged care furniture for Australian projects and healthcare furniture for Middle East hospital projects. For the wider procurement process, see hospital furniture procurement from China.
What evidence to ask each route for
Evidence should be requested for the exact model, not for a product family. For each route above, ask for the following in writing and keep the answers with the quotation.
- Ward and bedside makers: a section drawing of the top and edge, the hardware list and a finished sample of the surface.
- Seating factories: a frame and joint drawing, the covering reference and the cleaning instructions for each model.
- Upholstery specialists: the foam and cushion build described, the covering reference and who cuts and sews it.
- Casegoods workshops: shop drawings for approval, corner samples of each finish and a drawing of how units meet walls and floors.
- Full furnishing suppliers: a separate product sheet and sample for each product group quoted, so each can be judged on its own.
Specification gaps to close before quotation
A quotation cannot answer the questions below for itself. Before sending the enquiry, check that the brief answers these questions.
- Which document names the requirement for each item, and which edition of it applies?
- Is the covering reference named, and is an approved sample available to every maker?
- Are covers fixed or removable, and are replacement covers wanted?
- How will each item be fixed, and who supplies the fixings?
- Which product documents must arrive with the goods, and who checks them?
- How will items be marked and packed so they can be matched to rooms on site?
Next steps for a UK hospital furniture package
Send each maker the same brief: the item schedule, the named specification documents, covering references and the product documents you expect. Ask for answers in writing, item by item. FBM Sourcing also runs FBM Furniture’s healthcare furniture pages for furniture-only packages.
Questions buyers ask about healthcare furniture from China
Can furniture from China be supplied to a UK hospital project?
It can be quoted for a UK project, but each item must meet the requirements the trust or designer names. The brief should state those documents, and each maker should show evidence for the exact model, not for its range.
Who decides which standards apply to a hospital furniture item?
The project’s designer or the client trust sets them. Ask for the document names and editions in writing, and put them in the enquiry.
Should we approve a covering sample before ordering?
Yes. Approve a finished sample, record the approval, and refer to it in the purchase order, together with the cleaning instructions the maker supplies for that covering.
Can one supplier provide beds, seating and joinery together?
Some can. One supplier simplifies coordination, but ask it to show capability for each product group, because beds, upholstery and joinery use different skills.
How does FBM Sourcing support a healthcare furniture package?
