Packing: Where Window Imports Are Won or Lost
Damage in transit is the number one risk on window imports, and it is almost always a packing failure, not a shipping accident. The standard that works: windows crated vertically in plywood or steel A-frames (never flat), glass units separated with EPE foam and corner protection, frames wrapped to protect the finish, crates braced against container walls so nothing shifts at sea. Loose-loaded windows padded with cardboard are how you lose 10% of an order. Container Planning for Window Orders
A 40HQ container typically carries 250–350㎡ of standard residential windows in A-frames, less for oversized or curtain-wall units that need individual crating. Two planning rules save money. First, load in reverse installation order where possible, so the first crates off the container are the first windows your site installs. Second, windows rarely fill a container by weight, which makes them ideal consolidation partners for door sets, hardware and other building materials from China on the same project — a mixed container at 90% utilization beats two half-empty ones on freight cost per unit.

Duty treatment varies by market — aluminum window assemblies attract different rates and trade measures than uPVC in several jurisdictions, so confirm the HS classification for your exact product with your broker before ordering, not after arrival. Timeline: When to Order Against Your Site Program
Realistic numbers for a project-size window order: 30–45 days production for standard aluminum or uPVC systems (add 2–3 weeks for thermally broken or non-standard finishes), 3–7 days for inspection and loading, 30–45 days ocean freight to most Western markets including clearance. Delivery: The Last Kilometre Is Part of the Order
Windows arriving at a port are not windows arriving at your site. Confirm in advance who devans the container, whether the site can receive and lift crates (A-frames need a forklift or crane), and where windows are stored if the site is not ready — glass stored badly on site undoes everything the factory packed correctly.
