SPC vs Laminate: The Specification Differences That Matter
- Water resistance: SPC is 100% waterproof (stone-polymer core); laminate is water-resistant at best — its HDF core swells if standing water penetrates the joints
- Durability rating: SPC wear layers run 0.3–0.7 mm (commercial at 0.5+); laminate uses AC3–AC5 abrasion classes (AC4+ for commercial)
- Feel and acoustics: laminate walks warmer and quieter un-padded; SPC needs its IXPE/EVA backing for comparable acoustics
- Subfloor tolerance: SPC’s rigid core bridges minor imperfections; laminate is more forgiving of nothing — both need flat slabs
- Emissions: laminate’s HDF core must meet CARB/TSCA or E1 (see our guide to formaldehyde standards for China-made board products); SPC is inherently formaldehyde-free
- Cost from China: comparable visual grades typically land laminate 10–25% below SPC per square metre

At container quantity, China factory pricing for mainstream grades runs well below Western distributor levels — enough that freight and duties still leave 30–50% savings on most projects. The bigger commercial point is consolidation: SPC, laminate, skirting, nosings, underlay and the floor tiles for wet areas all load into shared containers, cutting the fragmented-freight cost that kills small-order economics.
