How Is an Electric Height-Adjustable Desk Built, and Why Does That Decide the Supplier?

A sit-stand desk is one schedule line built from parts that often come from different plants, and each plant answers only for its own part.

• Lifting columns: telescopic steel tubes in two or three stages. A three-stage column collapses shorter for the same travel, so it allows a lower minimum height or a longer stroke. Columns are made standard or inverted (widest tube at the foot or at the top).
• Motors: a single-motor frame drives both columns through a connecting shaft; a dual-motor frame has a motor in each column, kept in step by the control box; L-shaped desks use three.
• Control box and handset: power the motors, keep the columns level, store presets and, where fitted, stop the desk at an obstruction. The control box is mains-connected, so its plug and electrical documents must suit the destination.

Zhejiang Jiecang Linear Motion Technology Co., Ltd.

Its 2025 annual report describes a linear actuation business with smart office drive systems as one product line, sold overseas mainly on an ODM basis to manufacturers whose own brands sell the finished height-adjustable desks, with furniture manufacturers among its domestic customers. It reports bases in Ningbo, Xinchang, Malaysia, the United States and Europe, and says it led the drafting of China’s light-industry standard for electric height-adjustable desks, QB/T 5271-2018.

Jiecang also reports that its domestic sales are concentrated in Guangdong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, so a desk quoted by a factory in those provinces may carry a listed maker’s drive system; part numbers belong in the quotation.

• Scope: steel frames, crossbars and feet fitted with another maker’s columns and control boxes; useful when a project needs a particular frame colour, foot length or width range.
• Evidence to request: the drive-system maker and part numbers, powder coating data, and a test report naming both frame and drive system.

3. Office furniture factories that make tops, storage and benching

• Evidence to request: board core, surface and thickness, edge band material and adhesive type, formaldehyde evidence for the destination, and the frame supplier’s name.

4. Manual and counterbalanced desk makers

• Scope: crank-operated frames and counterbalanced desks, which BIFMA’s industry definitions describe as surfaces supported by mechanisms containing springs, weights, or pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders; used where there is no power at the desk.
• Evidence to request: the test report on the manual model and the load range the counterbalance is set for.

5. Height-adjustable bench and screen system makers

• Scope: two-sided and multi-position benches in which each position rises independently from a shared structure, with screens, cable trays and power rails.
• Evidence to request: a test report on the bench configuration rather than a single desk, screen test data where screens are in scope, and cable route drawings.

Which Standards Should the Specification Name for Height-Adjustable Desks?

Office specifications typically name the ANSI/BIFMA, EN or Australian and New Zealand standard for the desk, plus an electrical standard for the motorised parts. The designations below were checked against the publishers’ own records in September 2026.

A report protects the project only when it matches the build. Typical mismatches are a single-motor report offered for a dual-motor order, a top larger than the one tested, and a standing-height table offered for a sit-stand desk. On the last point, BIFMA’s published interpretation of X5.5-2021 confirms that adjustable tables whose minimum height is above 965 mm take half the concentrated functional and proof loads, so a standing-height unit that cannot lower below 965 mm was tested at lower loads. What Should the Desk Specification Fix Before Factories Quote?

• Motor count, column stages, and standard or inverted columns.
• Height range measured at the desktop surface, not the frame.
• Rated lifting load for the whole desk, with top, monitor arms and screens fitted.
• Declared duty cycle of the drive system.
• Collision detection, handset lock, and memory presets if required.

How Do Height-Adjustable Benches Differ from Single Sit-Stand Desks?

BIFMA’s compiled industry definitions (PD-1-2017) describe benching systems as primary surfaces interconnected to a length greater than 1829 mm by a shared support structure, for simultaneous use by several people, and say that stand-alone desks placed end to end, even when connected, are individual desks. So a single-desk report does not show how a shared-structure bench behaves. Three details decide whether a bench run works on site:

• What moves: screens and power rails on the fixed structure stay put; anything fixed to a top travels with it.
• Cable path: power and data run along the fixed structure, then up a flexible spine to each top, with slack for the full stroke.
• Clearance: neighbouring tops at different heights must not catch on each other, on screens or on trays.
