What Is the Difference Between Melamine, PVC and Lacquer Cabinet Finishes?

All three are factory-applied finishes for kitchen cabinet doors, vanity units and casegoods, but they are produced by completely different processes — which is why their durability, look and lead times differ so much:

  • Melamine: décor paper impregnated with melamine resin is hot-pressed directly onto particleboard or MDF; exposed edges are then sealed with edge banding — typically 1 mm ABS tape.
  • PVC / thermofoil: a 0.3–0.5 mm PVC foil is vacuum membrane-pressed over a routed MDF door, wrapping face and all four edges in one seamless piece — no edge banding on the fronts.
  • Lacquer: 5–7 spray coats (primer, base and top coats) applied to an MDF door with sanding between coats; available open- or closed-pore, matte through high-gloss.
  • Substrate compliance (all three): E1 or E0 formaldehyde class as standard, with CARB Phase 2 / TSCA Title VI certification required for US-bound projects.
  • Lead-time impact: melamine is the fastest to produce; a lacquer painting line adds roughly 10–15 days to the production schedule versus melamine.

Because the processes are so different, a one-line spec such as “white kitchen cabinets” will get you three factories quoting three different products. The finish call has to be made at specification stage, not at quote stage.

Melamine: The Volume Workhorse for BTR and Multifamily

Melamine is the default finish for build-to-rent, student housing and volume apartment kitchens because it is the hardest-wearing surface per dollar spent. The melamine resin cures into a dense, scratch- and stain-resistant face that shrugs off the daily abuse of a rental kitchen better than painted finishes costing multiples more. Modern melamine boards also come in convincing woodgrains and textured “synchronised” surfaces, so volume no longer has to mean flat white.

The make-or-break spec on melamine is not the face — it is the edge banding. Specify edge banding of at least 1 mm ABS applied with PUR (polyurethane reactive) adhesive on all exposed edges. Cheap quotes get there by substituting 0.4 mm PVC tape glued with EVA hot-melt: EVA glue lines soften with heat and moisture, and thin edging peels at the corners within the first year of tenant use. PUR adhesive cures into a waterproof bond and holds a visibly tighter, near-invisible glue line.

For a build-to-rent procurement package running into hundreds of identical kitchens, that one line in the specification — “1 mm ABS edging, PUR glued, all exposed edges” — does more for 10-year durability than any other clause.

PVC (Thermofoil): Seamless Faces for Kitchens and Vanities

Thermofoil doors start as routed MDF blanks — which is why thermofoil is the economical route to shaker profiles, grooved fronts and integrated handle rails that melamine cannot produce. A 0.3–0.5 mm PVC membrane is then heated and vacuum-pressed over the door, bonding to face and edges as one continuous skin with no seams and no edge banding to fail.

That sealed, seamless face is why PVC is a strong choice for bathroom vanities: there is no glue line for steam and splash water to attack, unlike an edge-banded melamine door. For mid-tier apartments and 3–4 star hotel kitchenettes, thermofoil delivers a painted-door look at a melamine-adjacent production speed.

The known weakness is heat. PVC foil softens and can delaminate when door faces sit against sustained temperatures in the 70–80°C range, which is exactly what happens on the cabinet gables and doors flanking a built-in oven. The fix is a standard one — specify aluminium heat-shield strips on every cabinet edge adjacent to ovens and cooktops — but it must be written into the specification and the appliance layout must be shared with the factory. Keep pure thermofoil fronts away from self-cleaning ovens entirely, or switch those two doors to melamine or lacquer in the mixed spec.

Lacquer: Premium Fronts for Hotels and Front-of-House

Lacquer is the finish for 4–5 star hotel casegoods, reception joinery, display millwork and any front-of-house surface where the design intent calls for true colour depth, a mirror-gloss or dead-matte sheen, or an open-pore timber texture that shows the grain through the coating. A proper lacquer schedule runs 5–7 spray coats on an MDF substrate — primer, colour coats and topcoats — with machine or hand sanding between every coat.

Two specification decisions drive both look and cost. First, open-pore versus closed-pore: open-pore keeps a tactile timber texture over veneer, while closed-pore builds a fully filled, glass-smooth surface. Second, sheen level: high-gloss requires additional polishing passes and the most demanding QC lighting, while matte and super-matte finishes hide handling marks better across a 300-room hotel.

The trade-off is time. The painting line — spraying, flash-off, curing and sanding across 5–7 coats — adds roughly 10–15 days to production versus an equivalent melamine package, and gloss lacquer also demands more protective packaging and careful handling at installation. Build that into the procurement programme from day one, especially on programmes that must clear the factory before the Chinese New Year shutdown window.

Substrate Compliance: E0/E1, CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI

Whatever the face finish, the board underneath must meet the formaldehyde-emission class of the destination market. Under the European E-class system, E1 board emits no more than 0.124 mg/m³ of formaldehyde in chamber testing, and E0 is the stricter class most quality Chinese cabinet factories now run as standard. For US-bound projects, composite wood must be certified to CARB Phase 2 / TSCA Title VI — emission caps of 0.09 ppm for particleboard and 0.11 ppm for MDF — and every board batch should carry the mill’s certificate, which your agent collects with the shipping documents. In a mixed specification, map finishes to rooms rather than choosing one finish for the whole project. The standard hotel combination is lacquer (or thermofoil) door fronts over melamine carcasses: the visible faces carry the design intent while the boxes — which nobody sees once installed — stay on the most economical durable finish. In apartments, a common split is melamine kitchens, thermofoil vanities in the wet areas, and lacquer only on any front-of-house or amenity-space millwork.

How Do the Three Finishes Compare on Damage and Repair?

Repairability is the comparison most specifications forget. A chipped melamine face cannot be touched up on site — the resin surface will not accept filler or paint invisibly — so a damaged melamine door is a replaced door. A lacquer door, by contrast, can be spot-repaired or fully re-sprayed, which matters over a hotel’s 7–10 year FF&E cycle. Thermofoil sits in between: the face resists chipping well, but once the foil is cut or delaminates from heat, the door is replaced, not repaired.

The practical answer for volume projects is attic stock: order 2–3% spare doors and end panels in the same production batch, because a replacement door pressed or sprayed a year later will never match the original batch’s colour and texture exactly. Spares cost little at production stage and ride along in the same containers.

Locking the Finish Spec into the RFQ

Finish is where cabinet quotes diverge most, because the same phrase — “melamine kitchen” — can legitimately describe 16 mm EVA-edged board or 18 mm E0 board with 1 mm PUR-glued ABS edging, and the two can sit 20–30% apart on price. Unless the RFQ pins down the finish system line by line, you are not comparing quotes; you are comparing guesses.
