Plywood vs MDF vs Particleboard: Which Carcass Material for Project Casegoods?

For project casegoods, the practical split is: plywood where structure, screw-holding and moisture exposure matter (carcass sides, wet areas, coastal and humid climates), MDF where machined profiles and painted or veneered faces matter (doors, drawer fronts, shaped components), and particleboard where flat laminated panels meet a budget at scale (shelving, back panels, wardrobe interiors in dry climates). Most hotel and apartment casegoods packages produced in China combine two or all three boards in one furniture item — specifying board by component, not by product, is how experienced FF&E buyers control both durability and cost.

The three boards at a glance:

  • Plywood: cross-laminated veneer layers; best screw-holding and moisture resistance of the three; density roughly 500–700 kg/m³; the premium option.
  • MDF: uniform fibre panel, density roughly 650–800 kg/m³; machines and paints cleanly; heavy, and swells if unsealed edges meet water.
  • Particleboard: pressed wood chips, density roughly 550–700 kg/m³; the lowest cost per panel; weakest screw-holding and moisture tolerance — melamine-faced (MFC) is its standard project format.
  • Formaldehyde class: for US-bound goods all three must meet CARB Phase 2 / TSCA Title VI emission limits; E1 or better is the working baseline for Europe, the UK and Australia.
  • Weight matters at scale: board choice changes the weight of a casegoods package by 15–25%, which shows up in container counts and freight.

Which Board Is Strongest — and Where Does Strength Actually Matter?

Plywood’s cross-grain construction gives it the best structural performance of the three: superior screw-holding, better span stiffness shelf-for-shelf, and far better tolerance of repeated assembly stress. That is why fixing points — hinge plates, drawer runners, bed frame connections, wall-fixing rails — are the components where plywood earns its premium. MDF holds screws adequately in its face but poorly in its edges, which is exactly where hinges land on a carcass side. Particleboard is the weakest in screw-holding and the most vulnerable to a stripped fixing after two or three re-tightenings — acceptable in a wardrobe interior that is assembled once, a liability in a drawer box opened forty times a day.

Strength, however, is component-specific, not product-specific. A hotel desk with a plywood sub-frame, MDF profiled front and melamine particleboard modesty panel is not a compromise — it is correct engineering. When Chinese casegoods factories quote against a loose specification, the substitution direction is always downward (plywood to MDF, MDF to particleboard) because the boards can look identical once veneered or laminated — so the board schedule must be written into the specification and checked at inspection, a point that connects directly to comparing factory quotes like-for-like.

How Do the Boards Handle Moisture and Humid Climates?

Moisture is where board choice becomes a warranty issue. Standard particleboard and MDF absorb water through unsealed edges and swell irreversibly — the familiar blown-out vanity plinth in a poorly specified bathroom. Plywood tolerates humidity cycling far better, and marine or WBP-glue plywood grades are the default for genuinely wet locations. For project buyers there is a middle tier worth knowing: moisture-resistant (MR, green-core) MDF and P3/MR particleboard grades cost only a modest premium over standard board and are the correct minimum for kitchens, bathroom vanities and laundry joinery.

Climate should set the floor for the whole package. For Caribbean, coastal and tropical projects, specify MR grades or plywood cores throughout — ambient humidity alone will find standard board over an asset life, and replacement logistics to an island resort cost multiples of the original board saving. Edge-sealing discipline at the factory (all cut edges banded or sealed, including invisible ones) matters as much as the core grade and is one of the specific checks in pre-shipment inspection — carried out at FBM by our own team at the factory, with photo and video records delivered to the client.

Which Carcass Material Do Hotel Casegoods Factories Actually Use?

The dominant export-hotel construction from Chinese factories is a hybrid: plywood or MR-MDF carcass sides and structural members, MDF for doors, drawer fronts and any profiled or painted component, and melamine-faced board for interiors, backs and shelving. Fully-plywood construction is available and commonly specified for luxury tiers, hurricane-zone and island projects; fully-particleboard construction exists at the economy end and is best reserved for back-of-house and staff accommodation furniture. The specification lever that moves cost most is the carcass side material — upgrading interiors and backs buys little durability, upgrading structure and fixing points buys a lot.

Two adjacent decisions ride on the same board schedule. Veneered finishes need a stable, uniform substrate — MDF under veneer is standard practice, not a cost cut. What Formaldehyde Compliance Do Project Boards Need?

All three boards are bonded with resins that emit formaldehyde, and every major destination market regulates the emission level of composite wood in delivered goods. For the United States, CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI set the emission limits and — critically — the documentation chain: the goods must be produced from certified board and the paperwork must say so, as detailed in our guide to CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI for furniture and cabinets from China. For Europe, the UK, Australia and the Gulf, E1 is the working baseline, with E0/super-E0 grades available where operators specify lower emissions. The procurement rule is simple: name the emission class in the board schedule, require the board mill’s certificate with the shipment documents, and match the certificate to the destination market before production starts — compliant board costs marginally more; retrofitting compliance after production is impossible.

How Should You Specify the Board Schedule in Your RFQ?

Write one line per component group, not one line per product: carcass sides and structure; doors and fronts; interiors, backs and shelving; wet-area components — each with board type, grade (MR where needed), thickness and emission class. That single table removes the substitution ambiguity that produces incomparable quotes and disappointing deliveries, and it lets a furniture sourcing agent hold every factory in a multi-supplier package to the same material floor. It also keeps freight honest: board choices set package weight, and weight sets container counts on a 200-room casegoods programme.

What Board Thicknesses Are Standard for Project Furniture?

Thickness is the other half of the board schedule, and export factories work to stable conventions: 16–18 mm for carcass sides and structural panels (18 mm is the contract-grade default), 25 mm for desk and table tops and counter substrates, 12 mm for drawer boxes and internal dividers, and 3–6 mm for back panels — with 6 mm grooved-in backs the more robust choice where wardrobes and tall units need racking stiffness. Shelf spans matter as much as thickness: an 18 mm particleboard shelf should not span much beyond 700–800 mm unsupported before it sags over an asset life, while plywood at the same thickness comfortably spans more — the reason long wardrobe shelves and minibar units are where board substitution shows up first.

When reviewing quotes, read thickness and core together: “18 mm board” from two factories can mean 18 mm plywood in one column and 18 mm particleboard in the other, a difference in both durability and weight. The board schedule table — component, core, grade, thickness, emission class — closes that ambiguity in one document.
