Specifying glass balustrades for a project comes down to four decisions: glass build-up (tempered vs laminated, and thickness), the fixing system (U-channel, spigots, standoffs or framed posts), the applicable standard for your destination (EN, ANSI or AS/NZS), and the hardware finish grade for the environment. Get those four right in the purchase order and a Chinese fabricator can deliver certified balustrade packages at 40–60% below Western fabricator quotes; leave them vague and you own a container of scrap glass cut to the wrong sizes.
Tempered, Laminated or Both?
Monolithic tempered glass is strong but disappears when it breaks — which is why codes for frameless balustrades with a fall risk increasingly require laminated glass that stays in place after breakage. Typical project builds: 12 mm tempered for interior framed or U-channel systems where codes allow; 13.52 mm laminated (6+6 with 1.52 PVB) as the framed-system workhorse; 17.52–21.5 mm tempered-laminated with SGP interlayer for frameless exterior balconies where the glass is the structure. SGP interlayers cost more than PVB but hold stiffness when wet and hot — the difference matters on coastal balconies.
Which Standards Apply to Your Destination?
- Europe/UK: EN 12150 (tempered), EN 14449 (laminated), EN 12600 impact classification; structural design to national annexes
- United States: ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201 Cat II; IBC 2407 requires laminated glass for most guard applications
- Australia/NZ: AS/NZS 2208 (safety glazing) and AS 1288 (design and installation)
- Universal rules: tempering stamp on every panel; test certificates issued for the production batch; heat-soak testing worth specifying for frameless exterior panels to cull nickel-sulfide breakage

Aluminium U-channel (top-, side- or recess-mount) gives the clean frameless line for balconies and terraces and adjusts for site tolerance. Spigots — 2205 duplex or 316 stainless — are the pool-fence standard and the budget frameless option. Point-fixed standoffs suit staircases and mezzanines with structural stringers. Framed post-and-rail systems with glass infill remain the most economical for long apartment balcony runs and are the most forgiving of site variation. Ordering and QC: Where Balustrade Packages Go Wrong
Glass is cut once. The workflow that protects you: architectural elevations → fabricator shop drawings → your engineer’s approval → production — never let a factory cut from architect drawings directly, because site dimensions drift and tempered glass cannot be trimmed. Pre-shipment inspection checks panel dimensions against approved shop drawings piece by piece, tempering stamps, edgework quality, interlayer specification, hardware finish grade and crate packing with edge protection for ocean transit. Panels should be labelled to your installation zones so site crews unpack in sequence.
