Turnstile and Speed Gate Manufacturers in China for Office, Residential and Hotel Lobby Projects: Five Sourcing Routes

Stainless steel speed gates with glass flaps
Blog,Product Selection Guide

Turnstile manufacturers in China include makers of tripod and waist-high turnstiles, makers of speed gates and flap or swing barriers for lobbies, access-control integrators that supply gates together with readers and software, stainless steel fabricators that build gate housings and cabinets, and makers of barrier gates for vehicle entrances. In an office, residential or hotel lobby, the gate controls who passes and in which direction, and it works only together with the reader, the controller and the building’s alarm and access systems. Each route supplies a different part of that chain under the same word “gate”.

This guide sorts the supply side into five sourcing routes so a procurement team can send one brief to the right makers and compare the answers fairly. It is not a ranking. No factory is named or scored here, and no claim is made about the safety, throughput, fail-safe behaviour or fire-alarm release of any gate. The project’s fire engineer, the access-control designer and the local authority define those requirements, and each maker must show evidence for the exact model it offers. For related entrance and access decisions, see our guides to automatic and revolving doors, smart locks and access control and bollards. For gates going to the EU, see our reading of the text of the EU Machinery Regulation, which applies from 14 January 2027. The Regulation does not name turnstiles, so whether a particular gate is machinery under it is a question for the manufacturer’s analysis and the project’s adviser.

What should a turnstile or speed gate brief state?

A brief that says only “speed gate, stainless, 6 lanes” produces quotations that cannot be compared, because the gate type, the reader and the control are left open. State at least the following, copied from the lobby plan, the access-control design and the fire strategy.

  • Lane layout: the number of lanes, the direction of passage for each lane, whether it is entry, exit or both ways, and where the wider lane sits.
  • Gate type per lane: tripod, waist-high, full-height, flap, swing or optical, named for each lane so that the quotation prices what the designer drew.
  • Lane width: the clear passage width for each lane type, as drawn by the designer, including the wider lane for luggage and wheelchairs.
  • Reader and credential: card, QR code, mobile credential or face recognition, and who supplies the reader, the controller and the software.
  • Link to the building system: the interface the access-control designer states, such as a contact output or a network connection, and who supplies the cable and the commissioning.
  • Power loss and alarm behaviour: the behaviour the fire engineer requires when power fails and when the fire alarm sounds. The brief states the requirement, and the maker confirms in writing how the exact model achieves it.
  • Housing and finish: the material, the finish and the colour of the housings and the glass or flaps, written against each lane type.
  • Power and wiring: the supply the gate needs, the cable entries and the floor ducts or slots the civil works must provide.
  • Location: indoor lobby or covered outdoor entrance, so the maker proposes a model for those conditions.
  • Packing and marking: units marked by lane position, with the manuals and keys travelling in the same carton.

Five sourcing routes for turnstiles and speed gates

1. Turnstile manufacturers

These makers supply tripod, waist-high and full-height rotating turnstiles, and a set may include a mechanism, a housing and a control board. Ask for the drawing of each model, the list of what is included, the provision for mounting a reader and a video of the exact model operating. This route suits staff entrances, plant and site entrances, gyms and schools where a rotating arm suits the flow.

2. Speed gate and swing barrier makers

These makers supply lane units with flaps or swing wings that open when the gate accepts a credential, in stainless steel or with glass faces. Ask for the lane widths offered, the description of the sensors, a written description of the behaviour on power loss and on a fire-alarm signal, and a video of the exact model in operation. This route suits office, residential and hotel lobbies where the gate sits in a finished interior.

3. Access-control integrators

Integrators supply gates together with readers, controllers and management software, and may commission the whole system on site. Ask which parts the integrator makes and which it buys in, ask for each component listed by name and ask which protocol connects the gate to the building system. Agree who tests the gate with the reader and the alarm signal before handover.

4. Stainless steel fabricators

Metal workshops build custom housings, cabinets, bridging counters and combined staff and visitor lanes around a mechanism. Ask for the fabrication drawings, the material and thickness as offered, a finish sample and the name of whoever supplies the mechanism that goes inside. This route suits lobbies where the designer has drawn a gate that is not a catalogue model.

5. Barrier gate and vehicle gate makers

Makers of boom barriers and sliding or swing gates supply vehicle entrances for car parks and sites, and some offer the control and the reader as a set. Ask for the same list of included items, the description of the sensors and the wiring diagram for the exact model. How to compare turnstile and speed gate quotations

  • Gate type and lane count: each lane priced against the lane type drawn, so a tripod is not compared with a flap gate.
  • Included parts: mechanism, housing, control board, reader, controller and software, each listed as included or excluded.
  • Interface: the connection to the building system, the cable and the commissioning, stated line by line.
  • Behaviour on power loss and alarm: the maker’s written description for the exact model, set against the fire engineer’s requirement.
  • Finish: material, finish and colour of housings and flaps, per lane type.
  • Power: the supply the model needs and the accessories included, such as a power unit.
  • After sales: spare parts, manuals and the remote support the maker offers, as stated on the quotation.
  • Exclusions and substitutions: any change of model, reader or finish that the maker proposes.

A gate that is cheaper on one line may be thinner on another. Read the list of included parts before reading the totals.

Coordinating gates with readers, fire systems and civil works

A lobby gate sits between three designs: the lobby layout, the access-control system and the fire strategy. Ask the access-control designer to confirm the reader type and the interface for each lane, and ask the fire engineer to confirm the behaviour required on power loss and on the alarm signal. Send both answers to every maker in the same brief, so that each quotation is written against the same requirement.

The civil works matter as much as the gate. The floor ducts, the slots for cables and the fixing points have to be in the drawings before the floor finish is laid, and the maker’s installation drawing has to be checked against them. Name one party who tests the gate with the reader and with the alarm signal before handover, and put that test into the contract documents.

Samples, approval and acceptance on delivery

Gates are made to a lane layout, so a physical sample of every lane may not be practical. Ask instead for a video of the exact model operating with the reader mounted, for a finish sample of the housing and the glass or flaps, and for the installation drawing for approval before bulk production. Record the approval in writing against the lane type.

On delivery, check a sample of cartons against the order: model, lane position marking, finish, quantity and the manuals and keys. Note any damage or difference in writing on the day with photographs, so the maker can respond while the evidence is fresh. Before shipment our own team checks quantities, finish, labels and packing against the signed-off specification, and you receive a QC report with photos and video.

What evidence to ask each route for

Evidence should be requested for the exact model, not for a product family. Ask for the following in writing and keep the answers with the quotation.

  • Turnstile manufacturers: the drawing of the exact model, the list of included parts and a video of the model operating.
  • Speed gate makers: the drawing, the written description of the behaviour on power loss and on an alarm signal, and the documents offered for the exact model.
  • Integrators: the list of components with the maker of each, and the interface description.
  • Stainless steel fabricators: the fabrication drawings, the material description and the name of the mechanism supplier.
  • Barrier gate makers: the wiring diagram and the description of the sensors for the exact model.

Specification gaps to close before quotation

The questions below are ones a quotation cannot answer for itself. Check that the brief answers them before it goes out.

  • Which lanes are entry, exit or both ways, and which lane is the wide lane?
  • Which gate type does each lane take, and which credential does each reader accept?
  • Who supplies the reader, the controller and the software, and who commissions them?
  • What does the fire engineer require on power loss and on the alarm signal?
  • Which ducts, slots and fixings must the civil works provide, and by when?
  • How are the units marked by lane position, and which manuals travel with them?

Next steps for a turnstile or speed gate package

Send each maker the same brief and ask for answers in writing, line by line, with samples or documents before bulk production. FBM Sourcing manages China procurement packages for overseas projects; furniture-only packages are also run through FBM Furniture.

Questions buyers ask about turnstiles and speed gates from China

Is a speed gate the same as a turnstile?

No. A turnstile blocks the lane with a rotating arm or bars, while a speed gate uses flaps or wings that open when the gate accepts a credential. Name the type for each lane in the brief so that every quotation prices the same thing.

Should the reader be bought with the gate?

Either route can work, but the quotation has to say who supplies the reader, the controller and the software. Ask the access-control designer to confirm the reader type, and keep each part on its own line.

Who decides how a gate behaves when the fire alarm sounds?

The project’s fire engineer and the local authority state the requirement. The brief should carry it, and the maker should confirm in writing how the exact model achieves it, with the description kept with the quotation.

Do we need a sample before ordering?

A physical sample of each lane may not be practical. Ask for a video of the exact model operating with the reader mounted, a finish sample of the housing and flaps, and the installation drawing for approval.
