Smart locks sourcing from China – electronic mortise lock on a hotel room door

Smart locks and access control are the one hardware category where the buying decision is half product, half software: the lock on the guest room door is only as useful as the system that issues its keys. China manufactures the bulk of the world’s hotel locking and access hardware, and buying it factory-direct at project scale — hundreds of door locks, a lobby of speed gates, staff-door readers — is straightforward once the integration questions are answered up front. Smart locks and access control sourcing from China gives hotel, apartment and office projects factory pricing on RFID hotel locks, electronic mortise locks, face recognition terminals and turnstiles, and FBM Sourcing manages the category as a building material sourcing agent — including the system-compatibility groundwork that separates a working installation from a box of electronics.

Types of Smart Locks and Access Control and Specifications for Commercial Projects

Commercial access packages draw on four hardware families:

  • Hotel guest room locks — RFID mortise locks on 13.56 MHz MIFARE-class cards, with mobile-key (BLE) options and mechanical key override
  • Electronic smart locks — fingerprint, PIN, card and app-operated locks for apartments, offices and back-of-house doors, online via gateway or offline
  • Face recognition and reader terminals — wall and gooseneck-mounted terminals for staff entrances, gyms, car parks and residential lobbies
  • Turnstiles and speed gates — tripod turnstiles, swing barriers and glass-wing speed gates for lobbies and amenity floors

Hardware specification is the familiar half. Lock cases should follow recognised durability grades — ANSI/BHMA A156.25 covers electrified locking devices for US-referenced work — with stainless 304 fronts as standard and 316 for coastal properties. Battery locks should be specified for 10,000+ openings or roughly 12 months on a set of AA cells, with low-battery warning and external emergency contact points. Exterior readers and gate hardware need ingress ratings of IP65 or better and an operating range covering the destination climate. On fire-rated doors the electronic lock must preserve the door’s rating — the same matched-certification logic explained in our fire-rated door hardware guide — and fail-safe versus fail-secure behaviour on escape routes is a code decision for the project’s engineer, locked into the specification before ordering.

The software half is where projects stumble. Hotel locks live inside an ecosystem of encoders, cards and management software, and if the property runs a PMS, the lock system’s interface to it must be confirmed by name and version before the order is placed — not discovered at fit-out. Turnstiles and readers integrate over standard protocols (Wiegand, OSDP, RS-485, TCP/IP), and the electrical contractor needs power, network and structural provisions — gate footings, cable routes, PoE where supported — on the drawings early. FBM’s role includes pinning these interfaces down in writing with the factory, ordering spare encoders and card stock with the main shipment, and confirming English-language software and documentation.

How Does Smart Lock and Access Control Sourcing from China Work?

The process starts from the door schedule and the operator’s system requirements. FBM confirms the integration questions above, then has sample units produced or configured: a working lock on a door-leaf mock-up with encoder and cards, a terminal running the actual management software. Samples are approved on function, not photographs — card read distance, mobile-key behaviour, enrolment workflow. Production runs 20–35 days for a typical hotel locking package; turnstiles and speed gates run similar timelines. The hardware consolidates into the containers carrying the project’s hotel room doors or wider material order — locks are compact, high-value cargo that should never travel LCL on its own — and commissioning support is arranged remotely with the factory’s engineers for the installer.

Quality Standards and Inspection

Electronics are inspected by operation. FBM’s own inspection team powers and tests sampled units from every batch in the factory: cards encoded and read, fingerprints enrolled, gates cycled, battery compartments and gaskets checked, finishes and markings verified against the approved sample. Firmware versions are recorded, accessories — encoders, cards, mechanical override keys, mounting kits — are counted against the packing list, and export packing is checked for the humidity and shock exposure of sea freight. Every stage is documented in photos and video and delivered to the client’s project team.

Why Source Smart Locks and Access Control Through FBM Sourcing

Access hardware succeeds as a system, and systems need one accountable buyer. Through FBM the locking package is specified alongside the doors it mounts in, priced factory-direct, integration-checked against the operator’s software, inspected working, and consolidated with the project’s door and building material order — on a transparent 5–8% service fee. It is the same single-pipeline logic our clients use across door sourcing and the wider hotel FF&E package: fewer interfaces, fewer surprises at fit-out.
