IEC 80601-2-52:2026: What Replaced IEC 60601-2-52 for Medical Beds

IEC 80601-2-52:2026 is now the current international particular standard for the basic safety and essential performance of adult medical beds. It replaced IEC 60601-2-52:2009+A1:2015 on 5 May 2026, so a healthcare project reviewing a Chinese hospital-bed offer should ask which edition the quoted model was tested against rather than accepting a generic “IEC 60601” statement.

This guide is for developers, general contractors, builders, commercial project owners, interior design and construction companies and FF&E solution providers preparing hospital, clinic, aged-care or other healthcare schedules.

What changed from IEC 60601-2-52 to IEC 80601-2-52:2026?

The designation changed and the earlier consolidated publication was withdrawn. The IEC Webstore lists IEC 80601-2-52:2026 as Edition 1.0, published on 5 May 2026, with a stability date of 2030. The same official catalogue marks IEC 60601-2-52:2009+A1:2015 as replaced and gives 5 May 2026 as its withdrawal date.

That date matters during procurement. A report issued to the old publication can still describe a real test performed before withdrawal, but it is not evidence that the model has been assessed to the current document. The project team should decide whether its specification accepts earlier evidence, requires the 2026 edition, or requires a market-specific adoption of the international standard.

Which beds are inside the 2026 standard?

The IEC scope covers the basic safety and essential performance of medical beds intended for adults. It includes electrical and non-electrical manual medical beds, with or without adjustable functions. It can also apply to a bed lift, a detachable mattress-support platform, or a manufacturer-specified combination of either component with a compatible non-medical bed.

The scope is not a label for every bed used in a healthcare building. The IEC catalogue expressly excludes medical beds for children and adults outside its defined adult range, speciality mattresses covered by the ISO 20342 series, and devices mainly intended for examination or transport under medical supervision, such as stretchers and examination tables. A schedule therefore needs the intended use and user group before a factory is asked for evidence.

What should a hospital-bed RFQ identify?

RFQ fieldWhy it changes the evidence request
Intended use and care settingSeparates a medical bed from a stretcher, examination table, domestic adjustable bed or other support product.
Adult, paediatric or atypical user groupThe 2026 document is for adult medical beds; excluded users follow a different standards route.
Electrical or manual adjustmentDefines the functions and components that need to match the tested configuration.
Bed lift or detachable platformConfirms whether the offered combination is inside the manufacturer-defined system.
Side rails and accessoriesAccessories, rails, controls and mattress platform must match the model and configuration named in the evidence.
Destination marketThe project may require a national or regional adoption, local electrical documentation or other market rules in addition to the IEC publication.

A general product brochure does not answer these fields. Put the model reference and configuration into the schedule, then compare the report, certificate or declaration with that exact reference. Our overview of hospital bed manufacturers in China explains how to separate different production routes, while the broader hospital furniture procurement guide covers the rest of the package.

How should test evidence be checked against the order?

  1. Read the title and edition. The current reference is IEC 80601-2-52:2026. Do not infer compliance from “IEC medical bed” in a catalogue.
  2. Match the manufacturer and model. The legal manufacturer and exact model in the report must correspond to the quotation and nameplate.
  3. Match the configuration. Rails, control type, bed lift, mattress-support platform and compatible accessories should not be substituted after the evidence is approved.
  4. Check the scope and exclusions. A test for an adult medical bed does not automatically cover a paediatric bed, stretcher, examination couch or speciality mattress.
  5. Confirm the destination route. The international standard is one layer; the importer, specifier and approving authority decide which local adoption and documents the project requires.

What should be approved before production?

The project team should freeze the model, finish, mattress-support size, rail configuration, controls, wheels or castors, accessories, labels, manuals and packing. Any change to a safety-related component after approval should return to the evidence check. This is especially important when several factories quote products that look similar but use different control systems, rail geometry or accessory interfaces.

For a multi-category healthcare package, keep beds, bedside cabinets, over-bed tables, waiting seating, clinical storage and loose furniture on separate schedule lines. A hospital-bed standard does not establish compliance for the surrounding furniture. The healthcare furniture manufacturer guide shows why the package is divided by production line.

How does inspection fit into standards evidence?

A standard report and an order inspection answer different questions. The report addresses the model and tests stated in its scope. The pre-shipment inspection checks whether the completed bulk order matches the signed-off model, quantities, visible configuration, finish, labels and packing. It does not recreate a laboratory test or expand a report to a different model.

FBM Sourcing’s own team carries out one inspection after bulk production is finished and before shipment. Your project team is welcome to attend. The report records the order presented for shipment; any standards decision remains with the project specifier, importer and approving authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IEC 60601-2-52 still current?

No. The IEC catalogue marks IEC 60601-2-52:2009+A1:2015 as replaced and withdrawn on 5 May 2026. IEC 80601-2-52:2026 is the current publication.

Does IEC 80601-2-52:2026 cover manual medical beds?

Yes. Its published scope includes electrical and non-electrical manual medical beds, with or without adjustable functions, when intended for adults and otherwise within scope.

Does the standard cover paediatric beds?

No. The published scope excludes medical beds for children and adults outside the document’s defined adult range; the IEC catalogue points to IEC 80601-2-89 for that group.

Does a hospital-bed report cover a stretcher or examination table?

No. Devices mainly intended for examination or transport under medical supervision, including stretchers and examination tables, are excluded from the published scope.

What should be sent for a hospital-bed quotation?

Send the destination market, intended use, user group, model or performance brief, dimensions, electrical and adjustment functions, rail and accessory requirements, quantity and the standards or local adoption named by your specifier.
