Hotel bed sizes are set market by market, and the same name does not mean the same dimensions everywhere. In the United States, the Better Sleep Council, sponsored by the International Sleep Products Association, gives a king mattress as 76 by 80 inches and a queen as 60 by 80 inches. Other markets use their own conventions and the hotel brand standard often adds its own rules, so an FF&E specification should state every bed as a millimetre dimension, not only a size name.
This guide shows the US reference sizes, explains why the same label changes across the UK, Europe, Australia and the Middle East, and lists the fields a guestroom package needs so that mattresses, bases, headboards and linen all fit. For the manufacturer side, see our hotel mattress and bedding manufacturer guide.
What Size Beds Do Hotels Use in the United States?
The Better Sleep Council’s mattress size guide lists these approximate US dimensions:
| US size name | Approximate mattress size (inches) |
|---|---|
| Twin | 38 x 75 |
| Twin XL | 38 x 80 |
| Full | 53 x 75 |
| Queen | 60 x 80 |
| King | 76 x 80 |
| California King | 72 x 84 |
The guide describes these as approximate, so the exact tolerance should come from the project specification and the mattress supplier’s drawing. Which of these sizes a hotel uses in each room type is a brand-standard and design decision, not something a factory should choose.
Why Does the Same Size Name Mean Different Things in Other Markets?
Size names such as single, double, queen and king are trade conventions. Each market developed its own, usually in metric dimensions outside the US, and a name used in one market does not carry the US dimensions with it. A “king” ordered for a UK, European, Australian or Middle East hotel therefore has to be defined in millimetres in the specification. We do not reproduce a table of those markets here because we have not found a published source for each one that we can cite; the brand standard, the design team’s schedule or the local mattress trade body is the reference to use.
Middle East projects often follow the international brand standard of the hotel operator rather than a single national convention. The same applies to many resort and serviced-apartment projects elsewhere. When the operator’s brand standard gives a dimension, that dimension governs the order.
Which Items Must Share the Same Bed Dimension?
A bed in a hotel room is several products that must agree:
- Mattress: length, width and height, including any topper built into the specification.
- Base or divan: the platform size, which may be split into two units for delivery and access.
- Headboard: width relative to the bed and whether it is wall-mounted or bed-mounted.
- Bed skirt or valance: fitted to the base size and height.
- Linen: sheets, duvets and protectors sized for the mattress height as well as its footprint.
If one item is ordered to a nominal size and another to a measured size, the mismatch appears only when the room is made up. For the wider guestroom package, see our list of hotel furniture types by area.

Send us the room-type schedule. We will write each bed as one set of dimensions shared by mattress, base, headboard and linen.
What Should an FF&E Bed Specification State?
| Field | What to state | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Size by room type | Size name plus length, width and height in millimetres | Names do not transfer between markets |
| Tolerance | Allowed deviation on each dimension | Mattresses and bases are made separately |
| Twin and king conversion | Whether two single bases zip or link into one king | Changes base construction and linen |
| Base type | Divan, platform, legs or storage; split or one-piece | Affects packing, access and headboard fixing |
| Headboard interface | Wall-mounted or bed-mounted, with fixing detail | Sets headboard width and bracket position |
| Fire and destination rules | The standard or regulation named by the project | Mattress and upholstery fire rules differ by market |
How Do You Check the Delivered Beds Match?
Measure against the approved drawing, not the size name. A pre-production sample of the mattress and base, measured and photographed with the dimension marked, gives a reference for the bulk order. The carton label should carry the room-type code and dimension so that site teams can place each unit without opening it.
How FBM Sourcing Handles a Hotel Bed Package
FBM Sourcing is a Guangzhou-based China sourcing agent and project procurement service. We take the room-type schedule, write each bed as a set of dimensions shared across mattress, base, headboard and linen, and send the same specification to each production line so the parts fit together on site.
When bulk production is finished and before shipment, our own team carries out one inspection against the approved specification, covering quantities, measured dimensions, labels and packing, with photos and video. Clients are welcome to join that inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size is a US king bed?
The Better Sleep Council gives a US king mattress as approximately 76 by 80 inches and a California king as approximately 72 by 84 inches.
Is a king bed the same size in every country?
No. Size names are market conventions. Define every bed in millimetres in the specification instead of relying on the name.
Which document sets the hotel bed size?
The hotel operator’s brand standard and the design team’s schedule. The factory builds to the dimensions they state.
Why does mattress height matter?
It changes sheet and protector sizes, bed skirt height and the visual relationship with the headboard.
Can twin beds convert into a king?
Yes, if the bases are designed to link. State this in the specification because it changes base construction and linen.
