Chinese Doors and Windows: Sourcing Guide for Project Buyers

Chinese doors and windows are one of the highest-saving categories a construction project can source from China — typically 30–50% below comparable European or Australian pricing at equal specification, even after freight. They are also one of the easiest categories to get wrong, because doors and windows are engineered products: profile series, glazing units, hardware and installation details all have to match the building, not just the catalogue photo. This guide covers what project buyers — developers, contractors and fit-out companies — should confirm before ordering.

What the Chinese Door and Window Industry Actually Produces

The industry clusters around Guangdong (Foshan and Guangzhou for aluminum systems and timber doors), with major glass processing nearby. Product ranges relevant to commercial projects include aluminum casement, sliding and tilt-turn windows; thermally broken profiles for energy-rated buildings; uPVC window systems; curtain wall and shopfront glazing; solid timber, engineered and fire-rated door sets; and aluminum-glass interior doors.

Windows: Profile, Glass and Hardware Are Quoted Separately

A Chinese window factory builds your window from three sourced components: extruded aluminum or uPVC profile (quoted by series and wall thickness), the insulated glass unit (quoted by makeup, e.g. 5+12A+5 tempered), and hardware (locally branded, or imported brands at a premium). Two quotes for “the same window” can differ 40% because one uses 1.4mm profile with local hardware and the other 2.0mm thermally broken profile with imported hardware. Always compare at component level.

Doors: Buy Door Sets, Not Door Leaves

For commercial projects, order complete door sets — leaf, frame, architrave, hinges, lockset, closer — from one source. Mixing a door leaf from one factory with frames and hardware from another is the single most common cause of on-site installation problems, and for fire-rated doors it can void the rating entirely, as we covered in our guide to fire-resistant door manufacture in China.

Standards and Compliance by Destination Market

Chinese factories export to every major market, but certification is order-specific, not factory-wide. For Australia, confirm AS 2047 window testing and AS 1288 glass compliance. For the US, look for NFRC ratings and AAMA structural testing. For the UK and Europe, CE/UKCA marking on window systems and EN 1634 fire test evidence on rated door sets. The practical rule: ask for the test report matching your exact profile series and glass makeup, and have the compliance documents verified before deposit — a step we detail in door and window sourcing from China.

Matched Door and Window Packages Save Real Money

Projects that source doors and windows as one package — same finish system, one consolidation plan, one QC pass — consistently land better outcomes than projects that split them. Finishes match across the building, container space is shared (window frames and door sets pack efficiently together), and site delivery arrives in one sequence. On a recent multi-villa order we consolidated six door types and four window types into single-project containers; the approach is described in choosing China window and door systems.

QC Before Export: What Gets Checked

Doors and windows need three inspection points: profile and material verification at production start, dimensional and operation checks mid-production (every opening sash cycle-tested, glass units checked for seal integrity), and pre-shipment inspection with packing review — corner protection, glass separation, moisture control for timber doors. A window sourcing agent in China runs these inspections at the factory so problems are fixed before loading, not discovered at site.
