How a China Sourcing Agent Fee Is Structured

The useful comparison between proposals is not the fee number but the total cost structure: product cost, packing, inland haulage, ocean freight, destination charges, duty and the service fee.
What Does the Commission Actually Cover?
A real procurement commission is not a finder’s fee. On a properly managed project order, the fee covers work that would otherwise cost you a trip to China or an expensive mistake: shortlisting factories that actually produce your specification rather than reselling someone else’s, negotiating in Chinese at local market prices, managing sample approval before production starts, and running pre-shipment quality control on building materials and furniture before anything is packed.
It also covers consolidation — collecting goods from six or eight different factories into one container load plan — plus export documentation and loading supervision. For a developer or contractor buying twelve categories for one project, consolidation alone justifies most of the fee, because the alternative is either paying for part-empty containers or trying to coordinate eight factories from another time zone.
Is a Cheaper Agent Actually Cheaper?
The commission number is the most visible cost, but it is rarely where projects lose money. An agent who verifies factory audits, catches a finish defect at the mid-production inspection, and loads the container properly is cheaper than a lower-percentage agent who passes your order to a trading company and disappears until shipment day. When comparing quotes, ask each agent two questions: Who performs the QC inspections and how are they reported? Is consolidation and loading supervision included, or billed separately?
