Stair nosing manufacturers in China include aluminium extruders that produce nosing profiles with inserts, makers of stainless steel and brass nosings, tile trim manufacturers that supply nosings designed to sit with ceramic and stone treads, makers of rubber and PVC nosings for resilient flooring, and flooring suppliers that sell nosings matched to their own planks and sheets. In a hotel, an office or an apartment block, the nosing finishes the front edge of every step and landing, and it is the part of the stair that people see and step on first. Each route supplies a different profile, insert and fixing under the same name.
This guide sorts the supply side into five sourcing routes so a procurement team can send one brief to the right makers and compare the answers fairly. It is not a ranking. No factory is named or scored here, and no claim is made about the slip resistance, durability or visual contrast of any product. The architect and the local building rules define those requirements, and each maker must show evidence for the exact profile and insert it offers. For related items, see our guides to slip resistance ratings for commercial tiles and skirting and trim sourcing.
What should a stair nosing brief state?
A brief that says only “aluminium stair nosing, 400 m” produces quotations that cannot be compared, because the profile, the insert and the tread finish are left open. State at least the following, copied from the stair drawings and the finishes schedule.
- Item code and quantity: each nosing type from the stair drawings, with the length per flight and the number of flights, so profiles are priced against stairs and not against a total length.
- Tread and riser finish: the flooring the nosing meets on the tread and the riser, with its thickness, so the profile height and leg suit the finish.
- Profile: the shape the drawing shows, the visible tread and riser faces, and whether the nosing is set into the finish or fixed on top of it.
- Insert: the insert material and colour the specification states, and whether the insert is to be replaceable.
- Visual contrast: any contrast between nosing and tread the specification requires, written as the specification writes it.
- Material and finish: aluminium finish, stainless steel grade or brass as specified, and the finish on the visible faces.
- Fixing: mechanical fixing, adhesive, or a leg bedded into the screed or tile bed, as the detail shows.
- Lengths and ends: stock lengths or profiles cut to each step, end caps, and returns at landings.
- Packing: how profiles are protected and bundled by stair, and which parts ship separately.
Five sourcing routes for stair nosings and stair edging
1. Aluminium nosing profile extruders
Extruders supply aluminium nosings with grooves for rubber, PVC or abrasive inserts, in mill, anodised or powder-coated finishes. Ask for the profile drawing with section dimensions, the alloy and finish description, the insert description and a sample length with its insert. This route suits commercial stairs where a replaceable insert is wanted.
2. Stainless steel and brass nosing makers
These makers fold or machine nosings in stainless steel or brass, plain or with grooves and inserts. Ask for the profile drawing, the material grade and finish, the groove and insert description and a sample. This route suits lobbies and feature stairs where the nosing is part of the design.
3. Tile trim manufacturers
Tile trim makers supply nosings with a leg that is bedded under the tile, in aluminium, stainless steel or PVC. Ask for the profile drawing, the tile thickness the profile suits, the finish and a sample bedded with the specified tile. See our guide to ceramic tile manufacturers in China for the tread finish.
4. Rubber and PVC nosing makers
Makers of resilient nosings produce rubber or PVC profiles that sit with vinyl, rubber and carpet flooring. Ask for the profile drawing, the material and colour description, the adhesive the maker states for fixing and a sample with the specified flooring. See our guide to SPC and LVT flooring manufacturers.
5. Flooring suppliers with matched nosings
Some flooring suppliers sell nosings matched to their own planks, sheets or carpet tiles. This gives one party for floor and edge, but ask for each nosing type on its own line, for the maker of the nosing and for the evidence in that maker’s name.
How to compare stair nosing quotations
- Profile match: profile drawing and section dimensions per item code, matched to the thickness of the tread finish.
- Insert: insert material, colour and replaceability stated on every line.
- Lengths: stock length or cut length, end caps and returns, and the unit of measure: per metre, per length or per step.
- Material and finish: alloy and finish, stainless steel grade or brass, stated on every line.
- Fixings: screws, plugs or adhesive, included or excluded.
- Evidence: which test documents are offered for the exact profile and insert, with the date and the body that issued them.
- Exclusions and substitutions: any change of profile, insert, finish or fixing the maker proposes.
A quotation that is cheaper on one line may be thinner on another. Read the descriptions side by side before reading the totals.

Measuring stairs before profiles are cut
Nosings are long, straight profiles fitted to steps that are built on site, so the order depends on site measurements as much as on the drawing. Decide early whether profiles ship in stock lengths for cutting on site or cut to the length of each step, and who takes the site measurements if they are cut in the factory. Where stairs have winders, curved steps or landings, ask the maker how returns and angled ends are made and whether each piece is marked for its step.
Profiles cut to size need a cutting schedule: stair, flight, step and length, written in the same way on the order and on the labels. Bundles marked by stair and flight save time on site, and the same marks let a missing or damaged piece be identified without measuring the whole stair again.
Samples, approval and acceptance on delivery
Approve a sample length of each profile with its insert, bedded or fixed with the actual tread finish, before bulk production, and check the colour of the insert against the tread in the light of the stair. Record the approval in writing against the item code and keep the sample as the reference for the bulk order.
On delivery, check bundles against the order: profile, insert colour, finish, lengths and quantity per stair. Note any damage or difference in writing on the day with photographs, so the maker can respond while the evidence is fresh. Before shipment our own team checks quantities, finish, labels and packing against the signed-off specification, and you receive a QC report with photos and video.
What evidence to ask each route for
Evidence should be requested for the exact profile and insert, not for a product family. Ask for the following in writing and keep the answers with the quotation.
- Aluminium extruders: the profile drawing, the alloy and finish description and the documents offered for the profile with its insert.
- Stainless steel and brass makers: the drawing, the grade and finish description and a photograph of a finished nosing of the same profile.
- Tile trim makers: the drawing, the tile thickness the profile suits and the bedding instructions.
- Rubber and PVC makers: the drawing, the material description and the fixing instructions.
- Flooring suppliers: the nosing maker’s own documents for each exact profile, not the trader’s summary.
Specification gaps to close before quotation
A quotation cannot answer the questions below for itself. Check that the brief answers these questions before it goes out.
- Which tread and riser finish does each nosing meet, and at what thickness?
- Which slip resistance or contrast requirement does the specification state, in which standard and edition?
- Are profiles cut to each step or supplied in stock lengths for site cutting?
- Who takes the site measurements, and when?
- Is the insert replaceable, and are spare inserts part of the order?
- How are bundles marked by stair and flight, and what documents travel with them?

Questions buyers ask about stair nosings from China
Should nosings be cut to size in China or on site?
Either works if it is decided before the order. Cut-to-size profiles need site measurements and a cutting schedule; stock lengths need a cutting allowance and tools on site. State the choice in the brief so quotations price the same thing.
Who decides the slip resistance and contrast of a nosing?
The project’s specification and the local building rules do. Write the requirement with its standard and edition in the brief, and ask each maker for evidence issued for the exact profile and insert offered.
Can the nosing come from the tile or flooring supplier?
It can, which gives one party for floor and edge. Keep the nosing on its own line and ask who makes it, so the profile and its evidence can be checked separately from the flooring.
How should replaceable inserts be specified?
If the specification asks for replaceable inserts, ask each maker how an insert is removed and refitted, and state in the brief whether spare inserts are part of the order.
