Bollard Manufacturers in China for Commercial and Public Realm Projects: Five Sourcing Routes

Blog,Product Selection Guide

Bollard manufacturers in China include fixed steel and stainless steel bollard fabricators, cast iron and aluminium bollard foundries, precast concrete and stone bollard makers, removable and retractable bollard system makers, and street furniture companies that supply bollards with benches, bins and planters. A bollard is a short vertical post used to guide, separate or protect, and each route supplies a different material, mounting method and level of engineering under the same name.

This guide sorts the supply side into five sourcing routes so a procurement team can send one brief to the right makers and compare the answers fairly. It is not a ranking. No factory is named or scored here, and no claim is made about the impact rating or security performance of any bollard. The designer, the project specification and the local authority define those requirements, and each maker must show evidence for the exact model it offers. For related products, see our guides to street furniture and park bench manufacturers, metal gates and landscape lighting.

What should a bollard brief state?

A brief that says only “steel bollards, 120 pieces” produces quotations that cannot be compared, because purpose, section and foundation are left open. State at least the following, copied from the landscape or site drawings and the specification.

  • Drawing reference and locations: each bollard type with its location and the quantity per type.
  • Purpose: guidance, separation, protection of a facade or planter, vehicle control or security, as the designer states it.
  • Dimensions and section: height above ground, diameter or section, wall thickness and top shape as drawn.
  • Material and finish: the material and grade the specification names, the coating or finish and the colour reference, with an approved sample.
  • Mounting: surface-fixed on a base plate, set in a concrete footing, sleeved for removal or retractable, with the foundation detail drawn.
  • Performance requirement: any impact or security rating the project names, with the standard and edition, as set by the designer and the authority.
  • Fittings: reflective bands, lighting, locks, chains or sleeves, with quantities and who supplies them.
  • Packing: how bollards are protected so that finish damage in transit can be checked on delivery, and how packs are marked by type.
  • Documents: the data sheets, material certificates and installation instructions the project requires.

Five sourcing routes for bollards

1. Steel and stainless steel bollard fabricators

Bollards are cut, rolled and welded from steel tube or stainless steel, with a base plate or an embedded section. Ask for the section drawing with wall thickness, the material grade, the weld and finish description, the mounting detail and a finished sample with its fixing. These makers suit regular site packages where the project accepts a standard section. See our guide to stainless steel fabrication.

2. Cast iron and aluminium bollard foundries

Cast bollards are made in moulds with decorative profiles and are common in heritage and hospitality settings. Ask for the pattern drawing, the alloy or iron description, the finish system and the mounting method, and approve a finished sample. Ask how the maker controls casting quality across the batch.

3. Precast concrete and stone bollard makers

Concrete and stone bollards are cast or cut and finished in plain and decorative forms. Ask for the mix or stone name, the finish, the unit weight and the lifting and fixing method, and agree the delivery and installation equipment in advance. Approve colour and finish on a sample from the same production.

4. Removable and retractable bollard system makers

Removable, folding and retractable bollards come with sleeves, locks or mechanisms and sometimes with control systems. Ask which parts the maker supplies, the foundation and drainage detail, the lock or mechanism description and the engineering support offered, and request drawings and a working sample. Confirm in writing who is responsible for the interface with the ground works.

5. Street furniture companies supplying bollards with other items

Some companies supply bollards together with benches, planters, bins and signage as a street furniture package. This puts one party in charge of the coordination, but ask the company to price bollards as their own lines and to name the maker whose product is used so that evidence can be checked. See our guide to street furniture manufacturers.

How to compare bollard quotations

  • Section and wall thickness: dimensions and material grade on every line, so a cheaper line is read against what it contains.
  • Finish: coating or finish system and colour reference named on each line.
  • Mounting: base plate, footing, sleeve or mechanism, with what is included.
  • Fittings: bands, lights, locks and sleeves listed with quantities.
  • Units of measure: price per piece or per set, and what a set contains.
  • Evidence: which test or material reports are offered for the exact model, with the date and the body that issued them.
  • Exclusions and substitutions: any change of section, material or finish the maker proposes.

A quotation that is cheaper on one line may be thinner on another. Read the descriptions side by side before reading the totals.

Samples, approval and acceptance on delivery

Approve a finished sample of each bollard type with its mounting parts before bulk production, and record the approval in writing against the drawing reference. Have the site contractor check the fixing detail against the sample, because foundation and fixing mismatches are found on site. Keep the approved sample as the reference for the bulk order.

On delivery, check a sample of packs against the order: type, height, finish, fittings and quantity. Note any damage or difference in writing on the day with photographs, so the maker can respond while the evidence is fresh.

What evidence to ask each route for

Evidence should be requested for the exact model, not for a product family. Ask for the following in writing and keep the answers with the quotation.

  • Steel fabricators: section drawing, material grade, finish description and a finished sample with its fixing.
  • Foundries: pattern drawing, material description and a finished sample.
  • Concrete and stone makers: mix or stone name, unit weight and a finish sample.
  • Removable system makers: drawings, foundation detail, mechanism description and a working sample.
  • Street furniture companies: the name of the maker, separate price lines and an installation method statement.

Specification gaps to close before quotation

A quotation cannot answer the questions below for itself. Check that the brief answers these questions before it goes out.

  • What is each bollard type for, and is the purpose written down?
  • Which section, material and finish does the specification name, and on which sample?
  • How is the bollard mounted, and is the foundation or sleeve detail drawn?
  • Does the project name an impact or security rating, and in which standard and edition?
  • Who supplies fittings, locks and fixings?
  • How are packs marked and protected for transit?

Next steps for a bollard package

Send each maker the same brief and ask for answers in writing, line by line, with samples or documents before bulk production. FBM Sourcing manages China procurement packages for overseas projects; furniture-only packages are also run through FBM Furniture.

Questions buyers ask about bollards from China

Can two bollard quotations be compared by unit price alone?

No. A unit price says nothing about wall thickness, material grade, finish or mounting parts. Compare section, material, finish and what the mounting includes on each line before comparing totals.

Who decides the impact rating a bollard needs?

The designer and the local authority decide, from the purpose and the risk of the location. Name the requirement and its edition in the brief and ask each maker to show evidence for the exact model.

Should sleeves and fixings be quoted with the bollards?

Quote sleeves, base plates, locks and fixings on separate lines with quantities, even when one maker supplies everything, so that missing parts appear before the order and not on site.

Do bollards need a sample before ordering?

Yes. Approve a finished sample with its mounting parts and keep it as the reference for the bulk order.

How does FBM Sourcing support this kind of package?

We review the brief, collect comparable quotations and manage the package for the project. For suppliers you nominate, we charge a 5% commission; for products we source for you, we quote a direct price. Our own team performs one inspection after bulk production is complete and before shipment, and the client’s project team is welcome to attend.
