Clay brick and brick slip manufacturers in China include extruded clay brick plants, pressed and handmade-style facing brick makers, brick slip and cladding panel makers, paving brick producers and masonry unit suppliers that also offer concrete blocks and accessories. A brick is a small repeated unit, and each route supplies a different body, size range, surface and delivery pattern under the same word.
This guide sorts the supply side into five sourcing routes so a procurement team can send one brief to the right makers and compare the answers fairly. It is not a ranking. No factory is named or scored here, and no claim is made about the strength, frost resistance or durability of any brick. The project specification, the structural designer and the local authority define those requirements, and each maker must show evidence for the exact unit it offers. For related products, see our guides to stone veneer cladding manufacturers, porcelain pavers and natural stone and ACP facade cladding manufacturers.
What should a brick brief state?
A brief that says only “red facing brick, 10,000 pieces” produces quotations that cannot be compared, because format, body and finish are left open. State at least the following, copied from the architectural drawings and the specification.
- Use: load-bearing wall, facing skin, cladding slip, paving or landscape edge, with the drawing reference for each area.
- Unit format: the length, width and height the designer draws, written as the specifier writes them, and any special shapes such as corners, bullnose and soldier courses.
- Body and colour: the body type the specification names, the colour reference and the surface texture, with an approved sample.
- Colour range: whether the colour must hold within a narrow range across the order, and how the mix of batches is controlled.
- Slips and returns: for brick slips, whether corner returns and special pieces are included and how they are fixed.
- Evidence the project names: the strength, absorption, frost or fire classification the project requires, with the standard and edition named by the project. These are set by the designer and the authority, not by the maker.
- Mortar and fixing: the bonding or fixing system the designer draws and who supplies adhesives, mortars and accessories.
- Packing: how bricks are stacked, strapped and protected, and how packs are marked by batch and drawing reference.
- Quantities and overage: the quantity per area and the allowance for breakage and special cuts.
Five sourcing routes for bricks and brick slips
1. Extruded clay brick plants
Extruded wirecut bricks are produced in large volumes from clay columns cut to size and fired in kilns, in standard formats and a limited colour range. Ask for the unit drawing with dimensions and tolerances, the body description, the kiln or batch records the maker keeps and a sample panel of several units, not one brick. These makers suit regular wall and paving packages where the project accepts a catalogue format and approves colour on a sample.
2. Pressed and handmade-style facing brick makers
Facing bricks with a softer, varied surface are made by pressing or by hand-moulding methods, often for hospitality and architect-led projects. Ask for a sample panel that shows the colour range across units, the allowed variation in size and colour in writing and the lead time for special shapes, and approve the panel before bulk production. See our guide to natural stone slab manufacturers for the neighbouring stone route.
3. Brick slip and thin cladding makers
Slips are thin units cut from fired clay or produced as thin facings, delivered loose or on backing sheets for rapid fixing onto walls and panels. Ask for the slip thickness, the backing or panel system, the corner and return pieces, the adhesive or fixing system the maker supports and a mounted sample, and confirm in writing how movement joints are drawn. See our guide to facade cladding systems for panel-based alternatives.
4. Paving brick and landscape unit producers
Paving bricks and clay pavers are made in formats and bodies chosen for ground use and are often supplied with edge units and accessories. Ask for the unit description, the surface finish, the laying pattern the designer draws and a sample laid out in the pattern, and agree the edge and kerb units in the same quotation. See our guide to porcelain pavers versus natural stone for outdoor surfaces.
5. Masonry suppliers offering bricks with blocks and accessories
Some companies supply bricks, concrete blocks, lintels and accessories as one masonry package. This puts one party in charge of the interface between units, but ask the supplier to price each unit type and accessory on its own line and to name the maker of each so that evidence can be checked.

How to compare brick quotations
- Unit format and tolerance: dimensions and the allowed variation on every line, so a cheaper line is read against what it contains.
- Body and finish: the body type, colour reference and surface treatment named on each line.
- Special shapes: corners, bullnose, returns and cuts listed with quantities, not included in a lump.
- Units of measure: price per piece, per thousand or per square metre of wall, and what the area figure assumes.
- Evidence: which test reports are offered for the exact unit, with the date and the body that issued them.
- Packing: pack size, strapping, protection and marking by batch.
- Exclusions and substitutions: any change of body, colour or format the maker proposes.
A quotation that is cheaper on one line may be thinner on another. Read the descriptions side by side before reading the totals.
Samples, approval and acceptance on delivery
Approve a sample panel, not a single brick, before bulk production, and record the approval in writing against the drawing reference. Include the corner and return pieces and the mortar or adhesive colour in the panel. Keep the approved panel as the reference for the bulk order.
On delivery, open a sample of packs against the order: format, body, colour batch, special shapes and quantity. Note any difference in writing on the day with photographs, so the maker can respond while the evidence is fresh.
What evidence to ask each route for
Evidence should be requested for the exact unit, not for a product family. Ask for the following in writing and keep the answers with the quotation.
- Extruded plants: unit drawing, body description, batch records and a sample panel.
- Facing brick makers: a sample panel showing colour range and a written variation allowance.
- Slip makers: slip thickness, backing system, return pieces and a mounted sample.
- Paving producers: surface finish, edge units and a sample laid in the drawn pattern.
- Masonry suppliers: the name of each unit maker, separate price lines and a packing list by unit type.
Specification gaps to close before quotation
A quotation cannot answer the questions below for itself. Check that the brief answers these questions before it goes out.
- Which format, body and colour does the specification name, and on which sample?
- What variation in size and colour is acceptable, and is it written down?
- Are corner pieces, returns and special shapes in the package with quantities?
- Which evidence does the project name, and in which standard and edition?
- Who supplies mortar, adhesive and accessories?
- How are packs marked so that batches can be traced on site?
Next steps for a brick package
Send each maker the same brief and ask for answers in writing, line by line, with samples or documents before bulk production. FBM Sourcing manages China procurement packages for overseas projects; furniture-only packages are also run through FBM Furniture.
Questions buyers ask about bricks and brick slips from China
Can two brick quotations be compared by price per thousand alone?
No. A price per thousand says nothing about format, body, colour range or special shapes. Compare unit drawing, body, finish and the special-shape list on each line before comparing totals.
Who decides which brick is acceptable for a facade?
The designer and the local authority decide, based on the use and the location of the wall. Name the requirement and its edition in the brief and ask each maker to show evidence for the exact unit.
Why approve a panel and not one brick?
A single brick hides the range of colour and size across a batch. A sample panel of several units shows the variation the project will actually receive.
Should special shapes be quoted with the standard units?
Quote corners, bullnose and returns on separate lines with quantities, even when one maker supplies everything, so that missing pieces appear before the order and not on site.
How does FBM Sourcing support this kind of package?
