Sleeper sofa manufacturers in China include pull-out mechanism makers, upholstered sofa bed factories, click-clack and daybed producers, wall bed and cabinet bed makers and full contract upholstery suppliers, and each prices a different scope under the same words “sleeper sofa”. A serviced apartment may need a sofa that converts nightly; an extended-stay suite may need a sofa bed used only for occasional guests.
This guide sorts the supply side into five sourcing routes so a procurement team can send one brief to the right makers and compare the answers fairly. It is not a ranking. No factory is named or scored here, and no claim is made about mechanism life, comfort or fire performance of any product. The specification must define those requirements, and each maker must show evidence for the exact model it offers. For the choice between the product types themselves, see our guide to sleeper sofa versus sofa bed versus wall bed.
What should a sleeper sofa brief state?
A brief that says only “sofa bed, grey fabric, 120 units” produces quotations that cannot be compared. State at least the following.
- Use pattern: converted every night, weekly or only occasionally, because the mechanism and mattress needs differ.
- Product type: pull-out sleeper, fold-down sofa bed, click-clack, daybed or wall bed, with the bed size when open.
- Dimensions: closed and open size, seat height and depth, and clearance needed in front of the sofa, drawn against the room layout.
- Mechanism: the type the designer names and who supplies it, with a request for a drawing and a sample unit.
- Mattress: the mattress type and thickness, whether it folds, and how it is protected in the closed position.
- Frame and upholstery: frame material, foam description, covering reference and whether covers are removable.
- Handling: who will operate the bed, and the weight and effort the operator can reasonably apply.
- Packing: how the mechanism is secured for shipping, and whether units arrive assembled or flat.
Five sourcing routes for sleeper sofas
1. Pull-out mechanism makers and sofa-bed factories
These makers combine a frame and folding mechanism with a sofa body. The mechanism decides how well the bed opens and closes, so ask which mechanism each model uses, who makes it, how the frame is reinforced around it and how it is secured for shipping. Request a drawing of the open and closed positions, and a sample unit for your own test.
2. Upholstered sofa bed factories
Upholstery-led makers build the sofa body and buy the mechanism in. Ask for the foam and covering description, the cushion construction, and how the covering is fitted around the mechanism. Compare quotations model by model, because a sofa that looks the same can hide a different mechanism.
3. Click-clack and daybed producers
Click-clack sofas and daybeds convert with simple mechanisms and suit compact rooms and occasional use. Ask about the mechanism type, how the back and seat form the bed, and what bed size results. They are not built for the same daily conversion as a heavier mechanism, so state the use pattern in the brief.
4. Wall bed and cabinet bed makers
Wall beds fold into a cabinet and suit studios where floor space matters. These are joinery products: ask for shop drawings, the fixing method to the wall or floor, the mechanism supply, and what the designer must provide for fixing. See our guide to sleeper sofa, sofa bed and wall bed compared.
5. Full contract upholstery suppliers
Some suppliers offer sofa beds together with armchairs, beds, headboards and casegoods. This route gives one party to deal with, but ask the supplier to show capability for each product group, because mechanism work and joinery use different skills. For the wider upholstery range, see our guide to commercial upholstered furniture manufacturers.
How to compare sleeper sofa quotations
- What is included: frame, mechanism, mattress, cushions, covering and packing, shown in separate columns.
- Unit-by-unit match: each line tied to a unit type on your schedule, so missing items show up.
- Mechanism details: the type, who makes it and what the maker supplies for it, stated in writing for each model.
- Mattress details: the mattress type and thickness and how it is protected, listed for each model.
- Covering reference: the exact covering reference quoted, so a cheaper substitute cannot appear after the order.
- Packing: how the mechanism is secured and how units are protected in the container.
- Exclusions and substitutions: any change to material, thickness or components the maker proposes.

Serviced apartments and extended-stay hotels: what changes
In a serviced apartment the sofa bed may be the only bed in a studio, which makes the mattress and the nightly conversion central. In an extended-stay suite with a separate bedroom, the sofa bed may serve occasional guests, and the brief can accept a lighter product. Say which case each room type is, because it changes the mechanism and mattress the makers will quote.
For the mattress side, see our guide to hotel mattress and bedding manufacturers, and for fire rules for upholstered furniture in different markets see UK fire rules for upholstered furniture and US mattress rules.
Samples, approval and acceptance on delivery
Agree the approval route before the order, not after bulk production. Ask for a finished sample unit with the approved covering and mechanism, and have someone who will operate the bed in the project open and close it many times. Record the approval in writing and keep the unit as the reference for later batches.
On delivery, check a sample of cartons against the order: model, covering colour, mechanism type, mattress included and the way the mechanism was secured. Note any difference in writing the same day and send photographs, so the maker can respond while the evidence is fresh.
What evidence to ask each route for
Evidence should be requested for the exact model, not for a product family. For each route above, ask for the following in writing and keep the answers with the quotation.
- Mechanism makers: an open and closed drawing, the mechanism description and a sample unit for your own test.
- Upholstery factories: the foam and covering references and a description of how the covering fits around the mechanism.
- Click-clack and daybed producers: the mechanism description, the bed size when open and the use pattern the model is built for.
- Wall bed makers: shop drawings, the fixing method and the mechanism supply.
- Full contract suppliers: a separate product sheet and sample for each product group quoted, so each can be judged on its own.
Specification gaps to close before quotation
A quotation cannot answer the questions below for itself. Before sending the enquiry, check that the brief answers these questions.
- How often will each unit convert, and who operates it?
- Is the open size and the clearance in front of the sofa shown on the room plan?
- Is the mattress included, and is its type and thickness named?
- Is the covering reference named, and are covers removable?
- Which mechanism is specified, and is a sample unit available for testing?
- How will units be packed and marked so they can be matched to rooms on site?
Next steps for a sofa bed package
Send each maker the same brief: the unit schedule, use pattern, mechanism requirements, mattress and covering references. Ask for answers in writing, unit by unit, and request a sample unit to test before bulk production. FBM Sourcing also runs FBM Furniture’s hotel guestroom furniture pages for furniture-only packages.
Questions buyers ask about sleeper sofas from China
What is the difference between a sleeper sofa and a sofa bed?
The words are often used for the same product, a sofa that opens into a bed. Makers use them for different mechanisms and mattress types, so the brief should name the mechanism and mattress for each unit.
Should we test a sample unit before ordering?
Yes. The mechanism decides how well the bed opens and closes, so approve a sample unit, record the approval and refer to it in the purchase order.
Does the mattress come with the sofa bed?
It depends on the quotation. State in the brief whether the mattress is included, its type and thickness, and how it is protected when the sofa is closed.
Can one supplier provide sofa beds, beds and casegoods together?
Some can. One supplier simplifies coordination, but ask it to show capability for each product group, because mechanism work and joinery use different skills.
How does FBM Sourcing support a sofa bed package?
We review the brief, collect comparable quotations and manage the package for the project. For suppliers you nominate, we charge a 5% commission; for products we source for you, we quote a direct price. Our own team performs one inspection after bulk production is complete and before shipment, and the client’s project team is welcome to attend.
