Office Acoustic Pods and ISO 23351-1: How Speech Level Reduction Ratings Work

Blog,Buyer FAQs

ISO 23351-1:2020 is a laboratory method for measuring how much an office acoustic pod or other furniture enclosure reduces speech escaping from inside it. It produces a single-number, A-weighted speech level reduction value from measurements across one-third-octave bands. It does not certify ventilation, electrical safety, fire performance, glazing or accessibility, and it is not a material-only sound-absorption test.

That distinction matters when buying office pods from China. A supplier can show a thick wall, an acoustic-foam sample or a reverberation-room absorption report and still provide no evidence for the performance of the assembled enclosure. project teams should request a report for the complete pod model and treat every other system — ventilation, power, lighting, fire and glass — as a separate approval track.

For the manufacturer landscape, see our office phone booth and acoustic pod manufacturer guide. This page stays focused on the measurement and procurement evidence, so the two pages do not compete for the same search intent.

What Does ISO 23351-1 Measure?

The ISO catalogue describes Part 1 as a laboratory method for determining the speech level reduction of furniture ensembles and enclosures. The method compares a speech source in an empty room with the same source placed inside the product. Measurements cover one-third-octave bands from 125 Hz to 8,000 Hz and are combined into a single-number A-weighted quantity.

The standard applies to the complete furniture ensemble or enclosure. It is not intended for the performance of individual components. Therefore, a report for a wall panel, felt liner, glass sheet or door seal cannot be substituted for a report on the finished booth.

The practical reading is simple: the reported value describes the tested assembly under the test conditions. It does not automatically apply to a larger pod, a different door, another fan arrangement or a new wall build-up.

Speech Containment Is Not the Same as Sound Absorption

These two acoustic ideas are often mixed in supplier catalogues:

  • Sound absorption describes how a material or surface reduces reflected sound inside a room. Acoustic panels and baffles are normally discussed in this context.
  • Speech level reduction describes how much a complete enclosure reduces speech transmitted from a person inside it to the surrounding room.

An open felt booth may absorb reflections and improve comfort without containing a private conversation like an enclosed pod. Conversely, an enclosure can contain speech yet remain uncomfortable if internal reflections, ventilation noise or heat are poorly controlled. Put the two products on separate schedule lines and request evidence appropriate to each.

Our guide to acoustic panel manufacturers in China covers the material category; it should not be used as the approval basis for a closed phone booth.

What Does the Single Number Not Tell You?

The public ISO abstract supports the measurement range, scenarios and single-number result. It does not provide the detailed test procedure or any performance-class thresholds. Without the paid standard and the actual report, a project team should not invent a class table or translate one supplier's marketing grade into an ISO result.

The number also does not answer:

  • Whether the fans move enough air for the intended occupancy.
  • How loud the fans are inside the pod.
  • Whether the power assembly complies with the destination's electrical requirements.
  • Whether wall linings, carpet and upholstery meet the project's fire specification.
  • Whether each glass pane is safety glass to the destination requirement.
  • Whether the largest module fits the goods lift and access route.

Those are separate specification and evidence questions.

How Should a project team Read a Supplier Test Report?

Use the report as a chain of identity. Each link should match the product being ordered:

  1. Applicant and manufacturer: identify who submitted the tested unit and where it was produced.
  2. Model: match the report's model designation to the quotation, sample, purchase order and carton label.
  3. Construction: compare pod size, door, glass, wall build-up, seals, floor, roof and ventilation arrangement.
  4. Method: confirm the report references ISO 23351-1:2020 for the laboratory measurement.
  5. Result: record the speech level reduction result without converting it into an unsupported marketing class.
  6. Laboratory: retain the complete report, including the laboratory identity, issue date and all pages.

If a supplier offers one report for several pod sizes, ask the laboratory or supplier to state in writing which models the report covers and why. Do not assume the smallest and largest enclosures perform identically.

ISO 23351-1 Versus ISO 23351-2

Part 1 is the laboratory method. ISO published ISO 23351-2:2026 as a field method for determining the apparent speech level reduction of furniture ensembles and enclosures in field conditions.

The distinction is useful for project teams. A laboratory result supports product comparison under controlled conditions. A field measurement addresses the installed product in its real room context. The two results should be kept under their proper method names rather than treated as interchangeable.

What Else Belongs in an Office Pod Specification?

An acoustic result should sit inside a complete schedule entry:

Specification lineWhat to record
Pod identityModel, occupancy, external dimensions and finish
Acoustic evidenceFull ISO 23351-1 report for the assembly
VentilationDesign airflow, fan controls and declared internal noise
ElectricalDestination voltage, outlets, lighting and complete-assembly evidence
FireReports for each lining, infill, carpet and upholstery required by the project
GlazingSafety-glass evidence and permanent pane marking
LogisticsPacked module dimensions, weights, crate plan and assembly instructions
Site interfacePower feed, floor condition, lift limits and installer responsibility

Pods normally ship knocked down. The largest wall or glass module, not only the final footprint, must be checked against the loading door, goods lift and corridor turns. For mixed loads, see our office furniture container-loading guide.

Where FBM Sourcing Fits

FBM Sourcing manages the entire China procurement package for overseas construction projects. For an office-pod package, we can turn the schedule into supplier questions, compare product identities and reports, coordinate an approved sample and consolidate the shipment with other office furniture.

After bulk production is finished, our own team carries out one inspection at the factory before shipment, with photo and video records. That inspection can verify model labels, module counts, finishes, visible glass markings, electrical fittings and packing against the approved records. It does not create an acoustic rating or electrical certification; those come from the competent laboratory or conformity body.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does ISO 23351-1 measure for an office pod?

It measures the speech level reduction of a complete furniture ensemble or enclosure in a laboratory and reports a single-number A-weighted result from one-third-octave-band measurements.

Can an acoustic-panel test prove a pod's performance?

No. A panel absorption report concerns a component or surface. ISO 23351-1 is intended for the complete furniture ensemble or enclosure.

Does ISO 23351-1 cover ventilation and electrical safety?

No. Airflow, internal fan noise, power, lighting, fire performance and safety glazing require separate specifications and evidence.

Is ISO 23351-2 the same test?

No. Part 1 is the laboratory method. ISO 23351-2:2026 is a field method for apparent speech level reduction in installed conditions.

What must match between the report and the order?

At minimum, the model identity and tested construction should match the quotation, approved sample, purchase order and delivered labels. Changes to size, door, seals, wall build-up or ventilation should be reviewed rather than assumed equivalent.
