“Solid wood door” is one of the most loosely used terms in the door export market — and one of the most important for a buyer to pin down before ordering. A genuine solid wood door supplier in China can tell you exactly what’s inside the door leaf; a supplier selling a hollow or particleboard-core door under the same label usually can’t, or won’t.
What “Solid Wood” Actually Means in a Door Leaf
A true solid-core door uses either solid timber staves glued edge-to-edge through the full thickness of the door, or an engineered solid core (particleboard or LVL core bonded under pressure) faced with a wood veneer. Both are legitimately called “solid,” but they behave differently under load, humidity, and long-term use — and cost differently to produce.
Solid Timber vs. Engineered Solid Core
Solid timber stave-core doors offer the most authentic weight and sound deadening but are more sensitive to moisture and cost more to produce consistently at scale. Engineered solid core doors are more dimensionally stable across humid or coastal climates and are the more common choice for hotel and apartment projects ordering at volume, where consistency across hundreds of units matters more than solid-timber authenticity.
How to Verify Core Construction Before Ordering
A legitimate solid wood door supplier will cut a sample cross-section on request, showing the actual core material rather than just the veneer surface. Weight is also a reasonable field check — a genuine solid-core door is noticeably heavier than a hollow-core door of the same dimensions, and any supplier unwilling to let you weigh or cross-section a sample is worth treating with caution.
Sourcing this for a commercial project?
FBM Sourcing works with project owners, developers, main contractors and FF&E contractors on hotel, apartment, school, office and other commercial building projects. Send us your BOQ, drawings or product list — we’ll come back with a sourcing plan and budget estimate.
Sourcing Process for Solid Wood Doors
We confirm your project’s core specification requirement, then match your order to factories that can document core material consistency across production batches — not just a single approved sample. Pre-shipment inspection includes a cross-section check on a sampling basis, alongside the standard dimensional, veneer, and hardware checks applied to every wooden door order.
Matching Solid Wood Doors to Your Project
Solid wood doors are frequently specified alongside fire-rated doors for corridor separation, or as villa entry doors where authentic timber weight is part of the design brief. We help buyers confirm which construction method fits their project’s climate, budget, and performance requirements before committing to a factory.
