Powder coating — specified as Qualicoat Class 1/Class 2 or AAMA 2603/2604/2605 — gives unlimited RAL color at the lowest cost and is the finish on the large majority of China-sourced commercial aluminum packages; anodizing to AAMA 611 Class I (≥18 micron film) gives harder, metal-integral abrasion and coastal corrosion resistance in a limited metallic palette at roughly 15–35% higher finishing cost. The working rule: inland mid-rise projects are well served by Qualicoat Class 1 / AAMA 2604-grade powder; within about 2 km of salt water, or wherever the finish warranty must run 15–25 years, step up to Class 2 super-durable powder, AAMA 2605-grade coating, or Class I anodizing.

What a specification needs to lock, whichever route you choose:
- The grade, not the word — “powder coated” alone permits the cheapest polyester; write “Qualicoat Class 1 minimum, approved applicator” or “AAMA 2604 compliant”
- Film thickness with a check method — 60–80μm powder, 18–25μm anodic film, verified by gauge at inspection, not by datasheet
- Pretreatment — chrome or approved chrome-free conversion before powder; this invisible step decides whether coastal filiform corrosion appears in year 3
- Color control — signed master samples per RAL/anodic shade; one production batch per color for anodizing, where batch-to-batch shade shift is inherent
- Warranty holder — who stands behind years 5–25: the coater’s system warranty (Qualicoat/AkzoNobel/Tiger/PPG powder lines) or the fabricator’s project warranty
The Powder Grades: What AAMA 2603, 2604, 2605 and Qualicoat Classes Actually Buy
The American AAMA (now FGIA) ladder is written around accelerated weathering, and it is the cleanest way to think about powder quality even on non-US projects. AAMA 2603 is the entry grade — roughly one year of South Florida exposure, interior trim and light commercial use. AAMA 2604 is the commercial workhorse: five years South Florida, typically met by super-durable polyester powders, appropriate for most mid-rise window and door packages. AAMA 2605 is the monumental grade: ten years South Florida with tight color and gloss retention, met by 70% PVDF liquid systems and a shorter list of premium powder chemistries; it is what curtain wall consultants specify on landmark facades and what genuinely coastal projects should carry.
The European Qualicoat scheme grades the same reality differently: Class 1 standard polyester (roughly 2603–2604 territory, one year Florida), Class 2 super-durable (three years Florida, the sensible commercial default for exposed facades), Class 3 hyper-durable (ten years, PVDF-level). Qualicoat’s practical value in China sourcing is the applicator license: coating plants are individually approved and audited, and license numbers are checkable on the Qualicoat register. Anodizing: AAMA 611 Classes and Why Film Thickness Is Everything
Anodizing converts the aluminum surface itself into a hard oxide layer, so its performance is almost entirely a function of film thickness and sealing quality. AAMA 611 Class I means an architectural film of 18 microns (0.7 mil) or more — the grade for exterior windows, doors, curtain wall and louvers; Class II (10–18 microns) is for interior or lightly exposed work. European practice under Qualanod runs the same logic with thickness grades AA15, AA20 and AA25 — and 20–25 microns is the correct call for marine and heavily polluted environments. The two production risks to control in China: under-thickness (a 12-micron film sold as “anodized” performs like Class II whatever the invoice says — an eddy-current gauge check at inspection settles it in seconds) and poor sealing, which shows up later as chalking and dye bleed; a simple dye-stain sealing test belongs in the pre-shipment inspection plan.
Anodizing’s real limitations are aesthetic and logistical, not technical. The palette is bounded — clear silver, champagne, light-to-dark bronze, black — and shade is sensitive to alloy batch and process timing, so mixing extrusion lots or anodizing runs on one elevation produces visible banding. Project discipline: anodize each color in the fewest possible batches, retain control samples per batch, and never plan to “match later” for a phase-two order. Site damage is the other asymmetry — a chipped powder frame can be touch-up painted acceptably; a gouged anodic film cannot be restored outside the tank.

Which Finish Survives a Coastal Project?
Salt exposure is where finish selection stops being a taste question. The failure mechanism on powder near the sea is filiform corrosion: salt and moisture creep under the coating from cut edges and fixing holes, and threads of corrosion spread beneath an intact-looking film. Defense is layered — correct pretreatment (this is where cheap coaters cut), sealed cut edges, and either a Class 2/2605-grade system or a duplex build: a thin anodic pre-layer (5–8 microns) under the powder, which several premium Chinese facade fabricators offer and which coastal specifications increasingly demand. Anodizing at 20–25 microns simply does not have an under-film to creep beneath, which is why marina, seafront hotel and island-resort projects have defaulted to it for decades where its palette is acceptable.
Distance bands that hold up in practice: beyond ~5 km from salt water, standard Class 1 / 2604 powder is a sound commercial choice; 2–5 km, specify Class 2 super-durable and insist on verified pretreatment; inside ~2 km or direct seafront, use AAMA 2605-grade systems, duplex powder, or 20–25 micron anodizing, and buy the longer warranty in writing. Salt-spray hours quoted on Chinese datasheets (1,000/2,000/4,000 hours neutral salt spray) are screening numbers, not service-life predictions — treat them as pass/fail gates, and put your trust in the grade, the applicator license and the pretreatment audit instead.
Cost, Color and Lead Time: The Numbers for a Package Decision
On a China-sourced commercial window package, finishing is typically 8–15% of the fabricated window cost, which keeps the powder-versus-anodizing delta small at package level: moving from Class 1 powder to Class I anodizing usually moves the total window package price by only 3–6%, and from Class 1 to Class 2 powder by 1–3%. That is the correct frame for the decision — upgrading the finish on a $400,000 window and door package costs roughly a tenth of what one facade repaint or early replacement cycle costs.
Color economics differ more than unit prices. Powder gives any RAL at modest batch minimums, so multi-color schemes (dark exterior, light interior via dual-color extrusion assembly — now standard on Chinese commercial systems) carry little penalty. Anodizing prices climb for dark bronze and black (longer tank time) and every color needs batch discipline as described above. Lead time impact is minor either way when the fabricator owns or has a qualified line nearby — typically inside the 35–50 day fabrication window for a commercial package — but anodizing re-runs after a failed shade match cost 2–3 weeks, which is exactly the kind of schedule leak a sourcing agent’s batch-sample discipline exists to prevent. When comparing quotes, make every bidder state grade, film thickness and applicator on the quote line; an unpriced “powder coated” line is the cheapest polyester until proven otherwise, and the price comparisons buyers run at the Foshan building material market are meaningless without that line-level discipline.
Two more decision inputs deserve a line in the package review. Dark finishes and heat: very dark powder colors on large glazed elevations in hot climates raise frame surface temperatures by 15–20°C over light shades, which increases thermal movement across long mullions and can push standard polyester past its comfort zone — on Gulf and Australian projects, pair dark exterior colors with super-durable or PVDF-grade chemistry as a rule, not an option. And warranty paperwork: a finish warranty is only worth what its conditions allow, so before signing off a quote, read the exclusions — distance-from-coast clauses, mandatory wash-down cycles (typically every 3–6 months on coastal sites, annually inland), and whether the warranty is issued by the powder system owner or only by the fabricator. A 20-year number with an unmet wash-down condition is a 0-year warranty; put the maintenance schedule in the O&M manual on day one so the owner’s facility team inherits the obligation knowingly. For school and public-sector work, where funding reviews ask for finish life justification, keeping the system warranty and the applicator license in the handover file answers the question before it is asked.
Can You Mix Finishes Across One Building?
Yes — and well-run projects usually do, because elements weather differently and are touched differently. A common split that balances budget against exposure: Class 2 super-durable powder on the window and door frames where color flexibility and touch-up ability matter; Class I anodizing on high-touch entrance doors, handrails and column cladding where abrasion resistance earns its premium; and anodized or 2605-grade finishes on horizontal sun-control elements — louvers, fins and blades take the harshest UV-plus-rain cycling on the building, which is why we cover finish selection separately in aluminum sunshade sourcing from China. Two rules keep a mixed scheme safe: match colors across finish types only with physical samples viewed outdoors (a RAL 7021 powder and a black anodic film read differently in daylight), and keep each finish type with one applicator for the whole project so phase-two orders and replacement units come back on shade.
Factory QC: How the Finish Gets Verified Before It Ships
Finish quality is measurable, so the inspection plan should measure rather than admire. At pre-shipment on a window package: film thickness by gauge on a sampling plan across frames (60–80μm powder; anodic film per the specified class), gloss meter readings against the approved sample range, cross-hatch adhesion test on a sacrificial section for powder, dye-stain seal test for anodizing, and visual inspection under standard lighting at the specification’s viewing distance — commercial specs judge at 3–5 meters, and writing that distance down prevents disputes over cosmetic marks invisible in service. Paperwork verified alongside: the coater’s Qualicoat license or the powder maker’s system certificate, pretreatment process records, and the project warranty naming grade and film.
