Manhole Cover and Drainage Grating Manufacturers in China for Civil and Landscape Projects: Five Sourcing Routes

Blog,Product Selection Guide

Manhole cover and drainage grating manufacturers in China include cast iron and ductile iron foundries, composite and polymer cover makers, fabricated steel and galvanised grating makers, stainless steel and recessed-tray cover fabricators, and drainage product companies that supply covers with channels and gullies. A cover or grating is the part of a drainage system that people and vehicles use every day, and each route supplies a different material, frame and level of engineering under the same name.

This guide sorts the supply side into five sourcing routes so a procurement team can send one brief to the right makers and compare the answers fairly. It is not a ranking. No factory is named or scored here, and no claim is made about the load class, slip resistance or durability of any cover. The civil designer, the project specification and the local authority define those requirements, and each maker must show evidence for the exact model it offers. For related products, see our guides to floor drains and kerb and edging manufacturers.

What should a cover and grating brief state?

A brief that says only “manhole covers and channel gratings, ductile iron, 300 sets” produces quotations that cannot be compared, because size, loading and frame are left open. State at least the following, copied from the civil and landscape drawings and the specification.

  • Drawing reference and locations: each cover or grating type with its location, quantity and the drawing detail.
  • Clear opening and frame: the clear opening, the frame size and depth and the shape as the designer draws them.
  • Use and loading: pedestrian, vehicle or heavy vehicle, with the load class the project names for each location, set by the designer and the authority.
  • Material: cast iron, ductile iron, steel, stainless steel or composite as the specification names it.
  • Cover type: solid, vented, recessed tray for paving infill, channel grating or gully grating, with the detail drawing.
  • Surface and finish: surface pattern, coating or galvanising and colour reference, with an approved sample.
  • Locking and lifting: locks, hinges, lifting keys and safety features the drawing shows.
  • Marking: any lettering or logo the project requires on the cover.
  • Packing: how covers and frames are protected and marked by location, and which parts ship separately.

Five sourcing routes for manhole covers and gratings

1. Cast iron and ductile iron foundries

Iron covers and frames are cast in moulds and machined where cover and frame seat together. Ask for the pattern drawing with the opening and depth, the material description, the coating, the seating detail and a sample cover with its frame, and ask how the maker controls casting quality across the batch. This route suits roads, car parks and public realm.

2. Composite and polymer cover makers

Composite covers are moulded or pressed from resins and reinforcement and are lighter to handle. Ask for the material description, the frame detail, the surface pattern and a sample, and confirm in writing the use and loading the maker offers each model for.

3. Fabricated steel and galvanised grating makers

Steel gratings and covers are welded or pressed from bar and plate and are galvanised or coated. Ask for the bar size and spacing drawing, the frame detail, the coating description and a finished sample. See our guide to stainless steel fabrication for neighbouring work.

4. Stainless steel and recessed tray cover fabricators

Recessed tray covers take paving or flooring infill so the cover disappears into the finish, and stainless covers suit lobbies and terraces. Ask for the tray depth, the infill the cover takes, the finish description and a sample with its infill, and confirm who supplies the infill material.

5. Drainage product companies supplying covers with channels

Some companies supply channels, gullies and covers as one drainage package. This puts one party in charge of the interface between channel and grating, but ask the company to price covers and gratings as their own lines and to name the maker so that evidence can be checked. See our guide to bollard manufacturers for related public-realm items.

How to compare cover and grating quotations

  • Size and frame: clear opening, frame size and depth on every line.
  • Material and weight: material and unit weight named on each line, so a cheaper line is read against what it contains.
  • Load class: the load class the maker offers for the exact model, against the class the project names.
  • Finish: coating or galvanising and surface pattern named on each line.
  • Fittings: locks, hinges, lifting keys and seals listed with quantities.
  • Evidence: which test or material reports are offered for the exact model, with the date and the body that issued them.
  • Exclusions and substitutions: any change of material, frame or finish the maker proposes.

A quotation that is cheaper on one line may be thinner on another. Read the descriptions side by side before reading the totals.

Samples, approval and acceptance on delivery

Approve a sample cover with its frame before bulk production, and record the approval in writing against the drawing reference. Have the site contractor check the seating and the opening against the sample, because frame and opening mismatches are found on site. Keep the approved sample as the reference for the bulk order.

On delivery, check a sample of packs against the order: type, size, material, finish, fittings and quantity. Note any damage or difference in writing on the day with photographs, so the maker can respond while the evidence is fresh.

What evidence to ask each route for

Evidence should be requested for the exact model, not for a product family. Ask for the following in writing and keep the answers with the quotation.

  • Foundries: pattern drawing, material description, coating description and a sample with its frame.
  • Composite makers: material description, frame detail, the use and loading stated by the maker and a sample.
  • Steel fabricators: bar and spacing drawing, coating description and a finished sample.
  • Recessed tray fabricators: tray depth, infill detail, finish description and a sample with infill.
  • Drainage companies: the name of the maker, separate price lines and an installation method statement.

Specification gaps to close before quotation

A quotation cannot answer the questions below for itself. Check that the brief answers these questions before it goes out.

  • What clear opening and frame does the drawing show for each location?
  • Which load class does the project name for each location, and in which standard and edition?
  • Which material and which coating does the specification name, and on which sample?
  • Is the cover solid, vented, recessed or a channel grating?
  • Who supplies locks, keys and seals?
  • How are covers and frames marked by location?

Next steps for a cover and grating package

Send each maker the same brief and ask for answers in writing, line by line, with samples or documents before bulk production. FBM Sourcing manages China procurement packages for overseas projects; furniture-only packages are also run through FBM Furniture.

Questions buyers ask about manhole covers and gratings from China

Can two cover quotations be compared by unit price alone?

No. A unit price says nothing about material, weight, load class, frame or coating. Compare size, material, load class, finish and included fittings on each line before comparing totals.

Who decides the load class a cover needs?

The civil designer and the local authority decide, from the use and the traffic at the location. Name the requirement and its edition in the brief and ask each maker to show evidence for the exact model.

Should frames be quoted with the covers?

Quote covers and frames on separate lines with quantities, even when one maker supplies both, so that missing parts appear before the order and not on site.

Do covers need a sample before ordering?

Yes. Approve a sample cover with its frame and keep it as the reference for the bulk order.

How does FBM Sourcing support this kind of package?

We review the brief, collect comparable quotations and manage the package for the project. For suppliers you nominate, we charge a 5% commission; for products we source for you, we quote a direct price. Our own team performs one inspection after bulk production is complete and before shipment, and the client’s project team is welcome to attend.
