EN 1729-1 matches educational chairs and tables to pupils through size marks, colour codes and functional dimensions. The standard uses stature and popliteal height rather than age alone; the matching chair and table carry the same size mark. EN 1729-2 is the separate safety and test-method part. A school furniture schedule should therefore state both the size distribution and the evidence required for safety.
This guide explains the fixed-height size marks in EN 1729-1:2015 and how to turn pupil measurements into a procurement schedule. It is not a substitute for the purchased standard or a local education authority’s brief. For the wider sourcing process, see classroom and dormitory furniture sourcing from China and our school furniture manufacturer guide for Australian projects.
What Do EN 1729 Size Marks Mean?
EN 1729-1 covers functional dimensions and markings for fixed and adjustable chairs, stools and tables used in educational institutions. The public standard preview states that ordinary chairs and tables in Annex A are marked 0 to 7. The mark may be accompanied by a colour code, and adjustable furniture must identify the range of size marks it covers.
The stature and popliteal-height ranges exclude shoes, while the chair and table heights include a shoe allowance. That distinction matters when a school measures pupils and when a source checks the product dimensions.
How Do Size Marks Match Student Height?
| Size mark | Colour | Stature without shoes | Seat height | Table-top height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | White | 800–950 mm | 210 mm | 400 mm |
| 1 | Orange | 930–1,160 mm | 260 mm | 460 mm |
| 2 | Violet | 1,080–1,210 mm | 310 mm | 530 mm |
| 3 | Yellow | 1,190–1,420 mm | 350 mm | 590 mm |
| 4 | Red | 1,330–1,590 mm | 380 mm | 640 mm |
| 5 | Green | 1,460–1,765 mm | 430 mm | 710 mm |
| 6 | Blue | 1,590–1,880 mm | 460 mm | 760 mm |
| 7 | Brown | 1,740–2,070 mm | 510 mm | 820 mm |
These ranges overlap. That is deliberate: stature is one indicator, while popliteal height—the floor-to-back-of-knee measurement taken in a seated posture—helps select the chair. A local authority guide from Lincolnshire describes popliteal height as the measurement that defines correct seat height and sitting elbow height as the reference for work height.
Should a Tender Specify Age or Size Mark?
Specify size marks and quantities, not only age groups. Age is useful for planning, but children of the same age vary in height. A recent UK Department for Education technical manual gives indicative school-stage mappings, yet still specifies furniture to BS EN 1729-1 and -2. A practical schedule can show the measured pupil distribution, the number of seats and tables in each mark, and any adjustable range required for shared rooms.

What Must Be Marked on the Furniture?
The EN 1729-1 preview requires legible, indelible marking that includes the size mark or colour code, the covered marks for adjustable furniture, manufacturer identification and production date. Instructions identify the standard, give maintenance information and explain how multi-size furniture is adjusted. For adjustable products, the instructions also explain correct settings and posture.
In a project RFQ, ask for a marking drawing before production and include the item code or room code separately for logistics. The EN mark helps the school match users to furniture; the project item code helps the site team distribute cartons.
What Is the Difference Between EN 1729-1 and EN 1729-2?
- EN 1729-1 addresses functional dimensions and marking. It answers whether the chair and table fit the intended user group.
- EN 1729-2 addresses safety requirements and test methods. BSI lists BS EN 1729-2:2023 as current and under review.
A dimensional declaration is not a safety report, and a safety report does not prove that the schedule has the right size mix. Request both where the specification names both parts.
What Evidence Should Be Requested?
- A dimension sheet for each fixed mark or adjustable range.
- A clear photograph or drawing of the permanent mark.
- The complete EN 1729-2 report for the exact chair or table model where required.
- Adjustment instructions for multi-size products.
- A carton plan that keeps each mark identifiable at delivery.
How FBM Sourcing Turns Measurements into an RFQ
FBM Sourcing is a Guangzhou-based China sourcing agent and project procurement service. We take the room schedule, pupil-size distribution and product drawings and convert them into comparable lines by model, size mark, quantity, material, finish and evidence. Every source receives the same matrix. Substitutions are flagged rather than silently mixed into one total.
After bulk production is finished and before shipment, our own team checks item codes, quantities, dimensions, finishes, hardware, markings and packing against the signed-off specification, with photos and video. Laboratory safety testing remains a separate document; the pre-shipment inspection checks that the supplied goods match the approved model and markings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can school furniture be ordered by age group alone?
Age is only an indicative planning tool. EN 1729 uses stature and popliteal height, with overlapping size ranges. A schedule should state size marks and quantities.
Do the chair and table need the same size mark?
For the ordinary chair-and-table sets covered by Annex A, the matching mark ties the chair and work surface to the same user range. Do not mix a chair and table only because both are described as primary or secondary school furniture.
What is popliteal height?
It is the vertical measurement from the floor to the back of the knee while seated with thighs horizontal, lower legs vertical and feet flat. It is used to select seat height.
Does EN 1729-1 prove safety?
No. Part 1 is the functional-dimensions and marking standard. Part 2 contains safety requirements and test methods.
What should an adjustable chair show?
It should identify the size marks covered and include instructions explaining adjustment, correct settings and good posture, together with the other required identification and date marking.
