Rainwater gutter and downpipe manufacturers in China include aluminium roll-forming lines, galvanised and coated steel gutter makers, PVC and uPVC rainwater system makers, copper and zinc fabricators, and roofing contractors that supply the gutter with brackets, outlets and fixings as part of a roof package. A rainwater system carries water off the roof to the drainage below, and each route supplies a different material, profile family and set of fittings under the same name.
This guide sorts the supply side into five sourcing routes so a procurement team can send one brief to the right makers and compare the answers fairly. It is not a ranking. No factory is named or scored here, and no claim is made about the flow capacity, wind load or lifetime of any gutter. The roof designer, the project specification and the local authority define those requirements, and each maker must show evidence for the exact profile it offers. For related products, see our guides to metal roofing sheet manufacturers, roof tile manufacturers and waterproofing membrane manufacturers.
What should a rainwater system brief state?
A brief that says only “aluminium gutter, white, with downpipes” produces quotations that cannot be compared, because it leaves out the profile, the lengths and the fittings. State at least the following, copied from the roof drawings and the specification.
- Roof drawing reference and run lengths: the length of each gutter run and the height of each downpipe, taken from the roof plan and elevations.
- Profile: the gutter section and downpipe section the designer draws, with the width and depth as drawn, not as the catalogue names them.
- Material and finish: the base material, the coating or plating system and the colour reference, and whether the inside and outside faces differ.
- Fittings list: brackets, stop ends, corners, outlets, joiners, downpipe clips, shoes and bends, each with a quantity.
- Fixing method: fascia fixed, rafter fixed or concealed, and who supplies the fixings and sealants.
- Expansion and jointing: how long runs are jointed and where expansion joints are drawn.
- Capacity and loading: the rainfall, flow or snow loading the project requires, with the code and edition the project names. These are set by the designer and the authority, not by the maker.
- Packing: how long profiles are bundled and protected, because edge damage is the common transit fault.
- Documents: the data sheets, coating reports and installation instructions the project requires.
Five sourcing routes for gutters and downpipes
1. Aluminium roll-forming gutter lines
Aluminium gutters are formed in long lengths on roll-forming lines from coated coil, often cut to the length on the drawing, with a fittings range in matching colour. Ask for the section drawing with metal thickness, the coating system on the coil, the fittings list and a cut sample of the profile with one corner and one outlet. These makers suit regular roof packages where the project accepts a catalogue profile and approves colour on a sample. See our comparison of powder coating and anodised aluminium for the finish question.
2. Galvanised and coated steel gutter makers
Steel systems are common on industrial, warehouse and large commercial roofs and are formed from galvanised or pre-coated coil. Ask for the coil specification, the coating class the project names, the cut-edge treatment and the bracket pitch the maker proposes, and request a sample of a joint. Some makers of steel gutters also supply roof sheets and flashings; see our guide to pre-engineered steel building manufacturers when the gutter is part of a building package.
3. PVC and uPVC rainwater system makers
Plastic rainwater systems are injection moulded and extruded as a range of gutters, downpipes and fittings. Ask for the material description, the colour stability evidence the project requires, the range of fittings and the bracket spacing, and a sample of a joint and an outlet. They suit low-rise and multi-unit residential roofs where the specification allows plastic.
4. Copper and zinc fabricators
Copper and zinc gutters are fabricated in sheet or coil, often to a handmade or semi-custom profile for heritage, hospitality and architect-led projects. Ask for the sheet thickness, the temper, the jointing method and the fittings that are made to the drawing, and approve a sample of each profile and bend before bulk production. Lead time and handling differ from catalogue systems, so state the delivery window in the brief.
5. Roofing contractors supplying the gutter with the roof package
Some companies supply gutters, outlets and downpipes with roof sheets, flashings and installation crews. This puts one party in charge of the interface between roof edge and drainage, but ask the contractor to price the gutter system as its own lines and to name the maker whose product is used so that evidence can be checked. See our guide to sunshade and louver manufacturers where the roof edge also carries shading.

How to compare rainwater system quotations
- Section and thickness: profile width, depth and material thickness on every line, so a cheaper line is read against what it contains.
- Units: price per metre, per piece or per set, and whether it includes cutting to length.
- Fittings: corners, outlets, stop ends and joiners listed with quantities, not included in a single lump.
- Brackets and fixings: the bracket type and spacing, and whether fixings and sealants are in the price.
- Finish: coating system, colour reference and the sample the colour was approved on.
- Packing: how long lengths are protected and how many pieces go in each bundle.
- Exclusions and substitutions: any change of section, material or coating the maker proposes.
A quotation that is cheaper on one line may be thinner on another. Read the descriptions side by side before reading the totals.
Samples, approval and acceptance on delivery
Approve a cut sample of each profile, with one joint, one corner and one outlet, before bulk production, and record the approval in writing against the drawing reference. Have the installer handle the sample, because fitting problems appear at the bracket and the joint first. Keep the approved sample as the reference for the bulk order.
On delivery, open a sample of bundles against the order: profile, length, colour, fittings and quantity of each accessory. Note any difference in writing on the day with photographs, so the maker can respond while the evidence is fresh.
What evidence to ask each route for
Evidence should be requested for the exact profile, not for a product family. Ask for the following in writing and keep the answers with the quotation.
- Aluminium lines: section drawing with thickness, coil coating description and a cut sample with fittings.
- Steel makers: coil specification, coating class and a jointed sample.
- PVC makers: material description, colour stability evidence and the fittings range.
- Copper and zinc fabricators: sheet thickness, temper and approved samples of bends and joints.
- Roofing contractors: the name of the maker, separate price lines and an installation method statement.
Specification gaps to close before quotation
A quotation cannot answer the questions below for itself. Check that the brief answers these questions before it goes out.
- Which section does the designer draw, and in which material?
- What capacity or loading does the project name, and in which code and edition?
- Which finish and colour are approved, and on which sample?
- Is the fittings list complete, with quantities for each corner and outlet?
- Who supplies the brackets, fixings and sealants?
- How are long runs jointed and where are expansion joints drawn?
Next steps for a rainwater package
Send each maker the same brief and ask for answers in writing, line by line, with samples or documents before bulk production. FBM Sourcing manages China procurement packages for overseas projects; furniture-only packages are also run through FBM Furniture.
Questions buyers ask about gutters and downpipes from China
Can two gutter quotations be compared by price per metre alone?
No. A price per metre says nothing about material thickness, coating or fittings. Compare section, thickness, finish and the fittings list on each line before comparing totals.
Who decides the gutter capacity the project needs?
The roof designer and the local authority decide, from the roof area and the rainfall or loading requirement. Name the requirement and its edition in the brief and ask each maker to show how the offered section meets it.
Should fittings be quoted with the gutter?
Quote corners, outlets, stop ends and joiners on separate lines with quantities, even when one maker supplies everything, so that missing fittings appear before the order and not on site.
Are colour samples necessary for coated gutters?
Yes. Approve a coated sample against the colour reference in writing before bulk production and keep it as the reference for the order.
