In education furniture the frame material is a maintenance decision disguised as a design decision. A steel frame with a replaceable seat and worktop can be kept in service for fifteen years by a caretaker with a spanner; a wood frame furniture item that fails at a joint usually leaves the building. That is why the majority of classroom furniture in schools worldwide sits on steel, and why solid wood tends to appear in university libraries, seminar rooms and staff areas rather than in general teaching space.

What actually separates steel and wood frame education furniture?
Durability under the loads a school actually applies
Classroom furniture is not tested by normal use; it is tested by tipping back on two legs, sitting on desk edges, and being dragged rather than lifted. A welded steel frame absorbs those loads and deforms rather than failing. A wood frame relies on its joints, and repeated racking loads work joints loose over time. Where a wood item is well engineered — proper mortise and tenon or dowelled construction with corner blocks — it performs well; where it is screwed and glued to a price, it does not survive the abuse.
Repairability, which is where the money actually is
This is the strongest single argument for steel in general teaching space. On a steel-frame chair or desk, the wear parts — the seat shell, the worktop, the glides — are bolted on and can be replaced individually by school maintenance staff with basic tools. A damaged worktop becomes a fifteen-minute job. On a wood frame item, a failed joint typically means the whole piece is written off, because joint repair is a workshop operation.
Over a fifteen-year holding period this difference dominates the total cost, and it is invisible in a tender comparison that only looks at unit price.
Noise, which decides whether teachers like the furniture
Steel frames on a hard floor are noisier than wood, and this is a genuine issue in a classroom. It is also almost entirely solved by the glide specification: a good quality replaceable glide or a felt-faced insert removes most of the noise. Glides are consumables, so the specification should say what they are and confirm that spares are available. Buying steel-frame furniture with cheap moulded glides and then complaining about noise is the most common self-inflicted problem in this category.
Stacking, linking and storage
Steel frame chairs stack far more efficiently, which matters in halls, dining spaces and flexible teaching rooms where furniture is cleared regularly. Stacking height, linking device compatibility and trolley availability should all be specified. Wood frame chairs generally do not stack, or stack to a much lower height.
Weight and moving
Steel frame furniture is generally lighter for the same strength, which matters where students reconfigure rooms themselves. Heavy wood furniture in a room that is meant to be flexible tends to stop being reconfigured after the first term.

Moisture and environment
Science laboratories, art rooms, food technology rooms and outdoor covered areas expose furniture to water, chemicals and humidity. Powder-coated steel with a laminate or solid-grade laminate top handles that far better than a wood frame with a veneer or melamine top, where moisture ingress at the edge causes swelling. Edge banding quality is decisive in wet areas, and it is one of the first things a factory will substitute if the specification does not name it.
Appearance and where wood earns its place
Wood reads as warmer and more permanent, which is why it is specified in libraries, seminar rooms, senior common rooms, reception areas and staff spaces — rooms with lower churn, lower abuse and a longer replacement cycle. Solid wood is also easier to refinish than to repair: a scratched solid wood table can be sanded and re-lacquered where a laminate top cannot.
The practical answer on most education projects is not one material for the whole campus. It is steel frame with laminate or moulded components in general teaching and dining space, and wood in library, seminar and staff areas.
Which standards should an education furniture specification name?
Naming the standard is what turns a durability expectation into something a factory either can or cannot evidence:
- EN 1729-1 and EN 1729-2 — the core European educational furniture standards. Part 1 covers functional dimensions and the size mark system that matches furniture to student height; Part 2 covers safety requirements and test methods. If your specification names size marks, it needs Part 1.
- ANSI/BIFMA X6.1 — educational seating in US-referenced specifications, with ANSI/BIFMA X5.5 for desks and tables.
- AS/NZS 4610 series — school and educational furniture in Australia and New Zealand.
- EN 16139 — strength, durability and safety for non-domestic seating, which applies to visitor and lounge seating outside the classroom. Covered in detail in our EN 16139 page.
- CARB Phase 2 / TSCA Title VI — formaldehyde emissions from composite wood, mandatory for anything containing particleboard, MDF or plywood entering the United States. - E1 or E0 / F**** formaldehyde classes — where a European, Middle Eastern or Asian specification uses those grades instead.
- Upholstery flammability — CAL TB 117-2013 in the US, BS 5852 in the UK, and the relevant national requirement elsewhere, for any upholstered element.

The same two checks apply to every certificate: is your exact model on the schedule attached to the report, and are the dimensions you have specified within the tested envelope. A supplier answering “that is the same construction as our tested model” has not answered either.
What should be in a school furniture package sent to quote?
- Quantity by item type and by size mark or age group, not just by total.
- Frame material and, for steel, the tube section, wall thickness and coating specification.
- Seat and back material: moulded polypropylene, plywood, upholstered, or perforated steel.
- Worktop material, thickness and edge treatment — and specifically the edge banding type in any wet or heavy-use area.
- Glide type, and confirmation that replacement glides are available as spares.
- Stacking and linking requirements, plus trolley quantities.
- Whether tables are fixed height, adjustable, or tilting, and whether they are height-adjustable in the field.
- The standard the items must meet, and the student weight rating.
- Assembly format — assembled or knocked down — which changes container utilisation substantially on a large order.
- Spares package: seats, tops, glides and fixings held for the first replacement cycle.
That last line is worth a sentence of its own. Ordering a spares package with the original consignment costs very little and removes the problem of trying to match a discontinued seat shell in year six. It is the single most useful thing a school client can add to an education furniture order, and it is almost always left out.
How does the choice affect freight and site delivery?
Steel frame chairs shipped knocked down or nested stack far more densely than assembled wood frame chairs, which materially changes the number of containers on a large order. Wood frame furniture is also more vulnerable to moisture in transit and needs proper desiccant and wrapping. Either way, the arrival sequence should follow the room handover programme rather than the factory’s convenience — furniture stored on a live site is furniture that gets damaged. Yes, if any part of it is a composite wood panel. The worktop on a steel frame desk is usually particleboard or MDF, which brings the item within scope for US import. The certificate needs to cover the panel actually used, not a panel the factory has used previously.
Should we buy spare parts with the original school furniture order?
Yes, and it is the most useful and most frequently omitted line in an education furniture package. Ordering spare seat shells, worktops, glides and fixings with the original consignment costs very little and avoids the problem of trying to match a discontinued component several years later.
Can one factory supply both steel frame and wood furniture?
Some can, but many cannot do both well — steel tube fabrication with powder coating and solid wood joinery are different production lines with different equipment. On a mixed campus specification it is common to use two factories and consolidate them into one delivery programme.
