China’s engineered slab industry is not one industry. Engineered quartz, sintered stone (porcelain slab) and acrylic solid surface are made by different companies on different equipment, and a factory that is genuinely strong in one is usually not the same supplier for another. Getting a commercial countertop package priced properly starts with knowing which of the three you are actually specifying, and then shortlisting inside that category rather than across it.
This guide sets out the manufacturer categories and production clusters that matter for commercial countertop packages, what evidence to ask each type of supplier for, and the trade-remedy issue that changes the arithmetic entirely for US-bound quartz. It is a shortlisting guide, not a ranking — there is no scoring, and we do not publish which factories we work with.
Which Slab Material Are You Actually Specifying?
- Engineered quartz: roughly 90–93% crushed quartz aggregate bound with polymer resin, compacted under vacuum and vibration. Non-porous, consistent, and the volume choice for hotel vanities and back-of-house counters. Heat sensitivity is the known limitation.
- Sintered stone / porcelain slab: mineral powders pressed and fired at high temperature with no resin binder. Higher heat and UV resistance, available in very large formats and thin sections, and increasingly specified for kitchen worktops, feature walls and outdoor applications. Made by ceramic tile groups, not by quartz plants.
- Acrylic solid surface: mineral filler in an acrylic or polyester matrix. Thermoformable and seamlessly joinable, which is why it dominates healthcare and reception counters where a continuous coved surface is wanted. See quartz or solid surface for a healthcare or hotel project.
- Natural stone: a separate supply chain entirely — quarried, blocked and sawn rather than manufactured. See how to source marble and natural stone from China, and sintered stone vs quartz vs granite for the performance comparison.
Where Is Slab Production Concentrated in China?
- Foshan and the wider Pearl River Delta, Guangdong — the centre of gravity for ceramic and sintered slab production, with the large tile groups running the presses and kilns capable of the biggest formats. Also home to a significant share of quartz slab capacity.
- Yunfu, Guangdong — long-established stone processing base, historically natural stone, now with substantial engineered slab and fabrication capacity alongside it.
- Nan’an / Shuitou, Fujian — the largest natural stone trading and processing cluster in China, and the place to look when a package mixes natural stone with engineered slab.
- Hezhou, Guangxi — calcium carbonate and white stone resource base, feeding both natural stone processing and engineered stone filler supply.
- Laizhou, Shandong — granite processing centre, relevant when the package includes granite paving or heavy-duty external work.
For a commercial countertop package the practical implication is that a mixed specification — quartz vanities, sintered kitchen worktops, solid surface reception — will span at least two clusters and usually three suppliers, which is a consolidation exercise rather than a single-supplier purchase. Manufacturer Categories Worth Shortlisting
The entries below are supplier types with publicly identifiable examples, given so you know what kind of company to approach for what. Inclusion is not a recommendation and there are no scores — the last field on each is the evidence to request, because that is what actually separates suppliers once you are in conversation.
1. Listed engineered quartz specialists
- Example: Guangdong Zhongqi New Material (listed, Shenzhen Stock Exchange code 001212) is a publicly traded quartz surface producer whose filings and annual reports are in the public domain.
- Why this type: a listed company publishes capacity, revenue and export exposure, which lets you verify scale independently rather than relying on a sales claim.
- Best fit: large repeating quartz packages where slab consistency across many units matters.
- Evidence to request: current-year quartz slab capacity, the specific product series proposed, resin content, third-party test reports for flexural strength and water absorption, and confirmation of which export markets they already ship to.
2. Listed ceramic groups producing sintered slab
- Examples: Monalisa Group (Shenzhen Stock Exchange 002918) and Dongpeng Holding (Shenzhen Stock Exchange 003012) are both publicly listed building ceramics groups with sintered slab lines.
- Why this type: large-format sintered slab needs presses and kilns that only established ceramic groups operate; a trading company offering it is buying from one of these.
- Best fit: kitchen worktops, large-format feature walls, outdoor and high-heat applications.
- Evidence to request: maximum slab dimensions and thickness range actually in production (not catalogue maximums), breakage rate on export packing, edge fabrication capability, and whether fabrication is in-house or subcontracted.
3. Export-focused quartz slab producers
- Characteristics: mid-to-large private plants oriented to overseas contract work, typically holding a wider colour range and more experience with project-specific colour matching than domestic-market suppliers.
- Best fit: hotel and apartment packages needing a specific colour held consistently across phases.
- Evidence to request: batch consistency policy across production runs, how a repeat order in twelve months would be matched, and physical control samples retained against your approved slab.
4. Acrylic solid surface producers
- Characteristics: a distinct manufacturing base from quartz, concentrated in Guangdong, supplying sheet material rather than slabs and usually working through fabricators.
- Best fit: healthcare, laboratory, reception and any application needing seamless joints and coved upstands.
- Evidence to request: acrylic versus polyester resin content (this is the single biggest quality variable and the one most often blurred), thermoforming radius limits, and fabrication warranty terms.
5. Fabricators rather than slab producers
- Characteristics: companies that buy slab and cut, edge, mitre and template it to your drawings. Most commercial countertop packages actually need this capability more than they need a slab mill.
- Best fit: any package where countertops are cut to a schedule of sizes with sink cut-outs and edge profiles rather than shipped as full slabs.
- Evidence to request: CNC capability, edge profiles available, tolerance on cut-outs, how templates are received (drawing, DXF, or site template), and the packing method for finished pieces — fabricated tops break far more easily in transit than full slabs.
6. Natural stone processors with engineered slab lines
- Characteristics: Yunfu and Nan’an companies that can supply both natural and engineered material, useful when a design mixes the two.
- Best fit: packages combining marble feature areas with engineered slab in wet and high-traffic zones.
- Evidence to request: whether the engineered material is produced in-house or bought in, block or batch traceability for the natural stone, and sealing and finishing specification.
What Changes If the Project Is in the United States?
Quartz surface products from China are subject to US antidumping and countervailing duty orders, which materially changes landed cost on that specific product category and is the reason many US projects have shifted to non-Chinese quartz, to sintered stone, or to solid surface. This is a trade-remedy matter that sits outside the factory price entirely, and it needs checking against your specific product classification before a China quartz package is priced for a US project. See US anti-dumping duties on China: cabinets, quartz and flooring explained.
For projects outside the US the position is different, and quartz from China remains a straightforward commercial supply. Either way the classification question should be resolved at brief stage, because it can change which of the three slab materials is the right answer.
How Should You Shortlist for a Countertop Package?
- Fix the material category first — quartz, sintered or solid surface. Shortlisting across categories produces quotations that cannot be compared.
- Separate slab supply from fabrication in the enquiry, even if one company will end up doing both, so you can see what each is costing.
- Ask for a slab-level control sample, not a small chip. Colour and pattern read very differently at 3000mm.
- Specify thickness and edge profile per location — 12mm, 15mm and 20mm behave differently in fabrication and shipping, and a mitred apron is a fabrication cost, not a design detail.
- Plan the packing. Slabs ship in A-frames or crates and are one of the higher-risk categories for transit damage; agree the packing standard and a breakage allowance before the order rather than after.
- Check the classification and trade-remedy position for your destination before comparing prices.
If you have a countertop schedule or drawings, send them and we will return a package priced by material category with fabrication shown separately — and flag anything in the specification that would sit awkwardly with your destination’s requirements.
