Blog,Product Selection Guide

Water softener and filtration equipment manufacturers in China include makers of pressure vessels and control valves, firms that assemble complete softener and filter sets on a frame, makers of cartridge and bag filter housings, packagers that build plant-room skids with pumps and tanks, and general water treatment suppliers that quote a system against a water analysis. In a hotel or an apartment block this equipment sits in the plant room or the riser cupboard and treats the supply before it reaches boilers, laundries, kitchens and guest bathrooms. Each route supplies a different scope under the same name.

This guide sorts the supply side into five sourcing routes so a procurement team can send one brief to the right makers and compare the answers fairly. It is not a ranking. No factory is named or scored here, and no claim is made about the treatment performance, capacity or approval status of any unit. The project’s mechanical engineer and the local authority define those requirements, and each maker must show evidence for the exact model it offers. For related plumbing items, see our guides to building valve manufacturers and PPR pipe and fitting manufacturers.

What should a water treatment brief state?

A brief that says only “water softener, one set per building” produces quotations that cannot be compared, because the supply, the demand and the connections are left open. State at least the following, copied from the engineer’s schedule and the plant-room drawing.

  • Item code and quantity: each softener, filter and housing type from the schedule with the quantity per plant room, so equipment is priced against locations and not against a total.
  • Water source and analysis: the analysis report the engineer holds for the supply, attached as issued, so each maker sizes against the same document and not against its own assumption.
  • Duty: the flow and the demand pattern the engineer has designed for, written as the engineer writes them, with the treated points such as boilers, laundry and guest bathrooms.
  • Configuration: single or duplex, in parallel or in series, with bypass and the control logic the drawing shows.
  • Connections: pipe size, connection type and material at each tie-in, as the plumbing drawings show them.
  • Materials in contact with water: the vessel, valve and fitting materials the specification names for potable service.
  • Consumables: what media, salt, cartridges and sanitising items the first fill includes and who supplies later ones.
  • Controls and power: the supply voltage, frequency and plug or terminal arrangement of the destination, and who supplies the controller.
  • Packing: how vessels, valves and loose parts are packed and marked by plant room, and which parts ship separately.

Five sourcing routes for water softeners and filtration equipment

1. Pressure vessel and valve makers

Some makers specialise in the vessel and the control valve, which are then built into a set by someone else. Ask for the drawing of each vessel, the material description, the valve model reference and the documents offered for the exact model. This route suits projects with an engineer who has specified each component and will check the assembly.

2. Softener and filter set assemblers

Assemblers put vessels, valves, piping and a frame together as a finished set. Ask for the assembly drawing, the parts list with the maker of each vessel and valve, the pipework description and a photograph of a finished unit of the same model. This route suits repeat plant rooms where the same set is installed in many buildings.

3. Cartridge and bag filter housing makers

Housing makers supply the vessel that holds the cartridge or bag, in several materials and sizes. Ask for the drawing, the material description, the seal description and how the cartridge or bag is identified for replacement. See our guide to faucet and tapware manufacturers for the fittings downstream.

4. Plant-room skid packagers

Packagers build a complete skid with tanks, pumps, treatment vessels and controls on one frame. This puts one party in charge of the skid and one delivery, but ask for the skid layout drawing, the component list with the maker of each item, and how the skid is lifted and secured for transport.

5. General water treatment suppliers

General suppliers quote a treatment system against a water analysis and may make some items and buy in others. Ask which items the supplier makes and which it buys in, and request the evidence in the name of the maker of each exact model.

How to compare water treatment quotations

  • Model and configuration: the model named on each line, with single or duplex and the control arrangement stated.
  • Duty basis: the flow and demand each quotation was sized for, and the water analysis it refers to.
  • Included parts: piping, bypass, gauges, sampling points, drain connections and frames listed with quantities.
  • Units of measure: price per set, per vessel or per skid, and what a set contains.
  • First fill: media, salt or cartridges included, and the quantity of each.
  • Evidence: which test and approval documents are offered for the exact model, with the date and the body that issued them.
  • Exclusions and substitutions: any change of vessel material, valve, controller or frame the maker proposes.

A quotation that is cheaper on one line may be thinner on another. Read the descriptions side by side before reading the totals.

Documents that carry the order across the border

Treatment equipment is shipped with liquids drained and media in separate packages, and the paperwork has to say so. Ask each maker to state in writing how vessels are packed, whether media or resin ships inside the vessels or separately, and how loose parts are labelled for the plant room they belong to. Agree who supplies the operating and maintenance manual, in which language, and whether it is delivered with the goods or by file before shipment.

Keep the order documents together with the specification: the quotation line, the drawing revision, the parts list, the manual and the approval documents. The operator and the commissioning engineer will ask for them, and they are far easier to collect before shipment than after the equipment is installed.

Samples, approval and acceptance on delivery

Equipment of this kind cannot be sampled as a finished product, so approve the drawing and the parts list, and ask the maker for a photograph or a visit report of a finished unit of the same model before bulk production. Record the approval in writing against the item code and keep it as the reference for the bulk order.

On delivery, check a sample of crates against the order: model, configuration, parts list, labels and quantity per plant room. Note any damage or difference in writing on the day with photographs, so the maker can respond while the evidence is fresh. Before shipment our own team checks quantities, finish, labels and packing against the signed-off specification, and you receive a QC report with photos and video.

What evidence to ask each route for

Evidence should be requested for the exact model, not for a product family. Ask for the following in writing and keep the answers with the quotation.

  • Vessel and valve makers: the vessel drawing, the material description and the documents the maker offers for the exact vessel and valve model.
  • Set assemblers: the assembly drawing, the parts list with the maker of each component and a photograph of a finished unit.
  • Housing makers: the drawing, material and seal description and the way replacements are identified.
  • Skid packagers: the layout drawing, the component list with makers and the lifting and securing method.
  • General suppliers: the maker’s own documents for each exact model, not the trader’s summary.

Specification gaps to close before quotation

A quotation cannot answer the questions below for itself. Check that the brief answers these questions before it goes out.

  • Which water analysis is each maker to size against, and who issued it?
  • Which duty and which treated points does the engineer name for each plant room?
  • Which approval or listing does the specification require for materials in contact with drinking water, in which standard and edition?
  • What does the first fill include, and who supplies the next?
  • Which electrical supply and controller does the destination require?
  • How are crates marked by plant room, and what documents travel with them?

Next steps for a plant-room package

Send each maker the same brief and ask for answers in writing, line by line, with samples or documents before bulk production. FBM Sourcing manages China procurement packages for overseas projects; furniture-only packages are also run through FBM Furniture.

Questions buyers ask about water softeners and filtration equipment from China

Can two softener quotations be compared by unit price alone?

No. A unit price says nothing about the duty it was sized for, the vessel material, the valve or the first fill. Compare the model, the duty basis, the included parts and the evidence on each line before comparing totals.

Who decides how a treatment unit is sized?

The project’s mechanical engineer decides, from the water analysis and the demand. Give every maker the same analysis and duty in the brief so the quotations answer the same question.

Should vessels and controllers come from the same maker?

They can, which gives one party for the assembled set, but keep each item on its own line and ask for the maker of each so that the evidence can be checked item by item.

Do we need a sample before ordering?

A treatment set cannot be sampled like a finished product. Approve the drawing and the parts list, and ask for a photograph or a visit report of a finished unit of the same model before bulk production.
