Light steel stud, track and framing manufacturers in China include roll-forming lines for drywall studs and tracks, ceiling grid and furring channel makers, structural light gauge framing fabricators, accessory and fastener makers, and drywall system contractors that supply framing together with boards. Light steel framing is the hidden skeleton of partitions, ceilings and linings, and each route supplies a different gauge, profile family and set of accessories under the same words.
This guide sorts the supply side into five sourcing routes so a procurement team can send one brief to the right makers and compare the answers fairly. It is not a ranking. No factory is named or scored here, and no claim is made about the load, fire or acoustic performance of any framing. The designer, the project specification and the local authority define those requirements, and each maker must show evidence for the exact section it offers. For related products, see our guides to gypsum board and drywall system manufacturers, drywall partitions and ceiling and partition manufacturers.
What should a framing brief state?
A brief that says only “steel stud 75 mm and track” produces quotations that cannot be compared, because the same width can be made in different gauges and coatings. State at least the following, copied from the partition and ceiling drawings and the specification.
- Partition and ceiling types: the drawing references and the build-up each reference uses, with the stud and track sections as drawn.
- Section dimensions: web depth, flange and lip as the designer draws them, and the lengths per type.
- Material and gauge: the steel thickness the specification names, written as the specifier writes it, not as the catalogue calls it.
- Coating: the galvanising or coating requirement for each location, including wet areas and coastal sites as the project states them.
- Accessories: deflection heads, noggings, hangers, clips, connectors and fasteners, each with a quantity.
- Ceiling system: main runner, cross runner, wall angle and suspension components, with the grid layout drawn.
- Perforation and cut-outs: service openings or knock-outs if the project requires them.
- Packing: bundling, edge protection and labelling by section and length.
- Documents: the data sheets, material certificates and installation instructions the project requires.
Five sourcing routes for light steel framing
1. Drywall stud and track roll-forming lines
These lines form studs and tracks from galvanised coil in a standard range of web depths and gauges, cut to length and bundled by section. Ask for the section drawing with steel thickness, the coil coating specification and a cut sample of stud and track that fit together, and confirm the length tolerance in writing. They suit regular partition packages where the project accepts a standard section.
2. Ceiling grid and furring channel makers
Suspended ceiling framing is a separate product family of main runners, cross runners, wall angles, furring channels and suspension parts. Ask for the grid drawing, the runner sections with thickness, the load information the project requires and a sample assembly of a runner junction, and state whether the grid is exposed or concealed. See our comparison of mineral fibre, gypsum and metal ceilings for the ceiling finish the grid carries.
3. Structural light gauge framing fabricators
Load-bearing light gauge framing is engineered and fabricated to drawings as wall panels, trusses and floor joists, usually with a structural design package. Ask which party takes engineering responsibility, request the drawings and the material certificates, and read the metalwork requirements in our note on EN 1090 and structural metalwork where the destination uses it. See also our guide to steel structures.
4. Accessory and fastener makers
Connectors, clips, hangers, screws and anchors are made by separate producers and are often the cause of delays when they are missing from the package. Ask for the accessory list with quantities, the material and coating of each fixing and samples of the connectors, and confirm compatibility with the studs and tracks being supplied.
5. Drywall system contractors supplying framing with boards
Some companies supply framing, boards, insulation and installation crews as one system. This puts one party in charge of the build-up, but ask the contractor to price framing, boards and accessories on separate lines and to name the maker of each component so that evidence can be checked. See our note on acoustic ratings for hotel partitions where the build-up must meet a rating.

How to compare framing quotations
- Section and thickness: web depth, flange and steel thickness on every line, so a cheaper line is read against what it contains.
- Coating: the coating class named by the maker for each location.
- Length and tolerance: standard length, cut length and the tolerance the maker commits to.
- Accessories: hangers, connectors, noggings and fasteners listed with quantities.
- Units: price per metre, per piece or per bundle, and what a bundle contains.
- Packing: bundling, protection and labelling by section.
- Exclusions and substitutions: any change of gauge, coating or section the maker proposes.
A quotation that is cheaper on one line may be thinner on another. Read the descriptions side by side before reading the totals.
Samples, approval and acceptance on delivery
Approve a cut sample of each section, with the stud seated in the track and one connector, before bulk production, and record the approval in writing against the drawing reference. Have the installer assemble the sample, because fit and tolerance problems show up there first. Keep the approved sample as the reference for the bulk order.
On delivery, check a sample of bundles against the order: section, length, coating, labelling and quantity of each accessory. Note any difference in writing on the day with photographs, so the maker can respond while the evidence is fresh.
What evidence to ask each route for
Evidence should be requested for the exact section, not for a product family. Ask for the following in writing and keep the answers with the quotation.
- Roll-forming lines: section drawing, steel thickness, coil coating description and a cut sample.
- Ceiling grid makers: grid drawing, runner thickness and a sample junction.
- Structural fabricators: the engineering responsibility statement, drawings and material certificates.
- Accessory makers: accessory list, coating and compatibility confirmation.
- System contractors: the name of each component maker, separate price lines and a build-up drawing.
Specification gaps to close before quotation
A quotation cannot answer the questions below for itself. Check that the brief answers these questions before it goes out.
- Which steel thickness and coating does the specification require in each location?
- Are stud and track sections drawn, not just named?
- Are deflection heads, noggings and hangers in the package?
- Who takes engineering responsibility for load-bearing framing?
- Which documents must arrive with each shipment?
Next steps for a framing package
Send each maker the same brief and ask for answers in writing, line by line, with samples or documents before bulk production. FBM Sourcing manages China procurement packages for overseas projects; furniture-only packages are also run through FBM Furniture.
Questions buyers ask about light steel framing from China
Is stud width enough to compare two quotations?
No. The same width can be made in different steel thicknesses and coatings. Compare section, thickness and coating on each line before comparing totals.
Who decides the gauge a partition needs?
The designer and the project specification decide, based on the height, loading and performance the partition must meet. Name the requirement in the brief and ask each maker to quote that section.
Should accessories be quoted with the framing?
Quote hangers, connectors, noggings and fasteners on separate lines with quantities, even when one maker supplies everything, so that missing items appear before the order and not on site.
Can a drywall contractor supply the framing?
Often yes. Ask the contractor to price framing, boards and accessories as separate lines and to name each component maker so that evidence can be checked.
How does FBM Sourcing support this kind of package?
We review the brief, collect comparable quotations and manage the package for the project. For suppliers you nominate, we charge a 5% commission; for products we source for you, we quote a direct price. Our own team performs one inspection after bulk production is complete and before shipment, and the client’s project team is welcome to attend.
