Aluminum fabrication is the quiet workhorse behind most modern facades and fit-outs — machined extrusions, folded sheet components, welded frames, anodized trims — and China is where the world’s extrusion presses, anodizing lines and powder plants concentrate. Buying the category locally means paying a fabrication shop to process metal that was, in many cases, extruded in China anyway. Aluminum fabrication sourcing from China closes that loop: custom profiles, CNC-machined components, brake-folded flashings and welded assemblies produced, finished and packed at the source. FBM Sourcing manages the scope as a building material sourcing agent — die and drawing engineering, finish control, batch consistency and consolidated shipping in one accountable package.
Types of Aluminum Fabrication and Specifications for Commercial Projects
Project packages typically draw on four fabrication scopes:
- Custom extruded profiles — project-specific sections for glazing surrounds, joinery, LED housings and trims, extruded from new or existing dies and machined to length
- Sheet fabrication — brake-folded copings, flashings, column wraps, cassette panels and soffit closures in 1.5–3 mm sheet
- Welded assemblies — frames, brackets, planters and support constructions TIG-welded and dressed for architectural exposure
- Anodized and machined components — CNC-milled fittings, perforated elements and hardware components finished to match the main package
Alloy and finish carry the specification. 6063-T5 is the architectural extrusion standard, with 6061-T6 specified where structural strength governs; sheet work runs in 5052 or 3003 depending on forming severity. Finishes are system-specified: anodizing at 15–25 µm film thickness for metallic finishes and high-traffic trims, architectural powder coating at 60–80 µm for colour-matched schemes, and PVDF systems for high-exposure facade components — the decision logic is set out in our guide to powder coating vs anodized aluminum. For custom extrusions, the die is the gating item: a new die typically takes 10–15 days to cut and prove before the first production metal runs, and the die then belongs to the project for repeat orders.
How Does Aluminum Fabrication Sourcing from China Work?
The workflow is file-driven. Profile drawings or DXF sections, component drawings with tolerances, and a finish schedule go to the factory; the factory returns die drawings for new extrusions, developed flat patterns for folded work and shop drawings for welded assemblies — the same drawing-led sequence described in our CAD and shop drawings guide. First-article samples — a metre of extrusion, a folded corner section, an anodized colour plate — are approved before production, because anodized tones in particular vary between lines and lots.
Production for a typical project package runs 25–40 days from approved drawings and samples, plus die time where new extrusions are involved. Profiles ship in 5.8–5.9 m lengths to fit 40ft containers, film-wrapped and bundled; folded and welded components crate flat with foam interleaving, labelled to the installation drawings. Aluminum scopes are light for their volume, which makes them ideal consolidation cargo alongside the project’s heavier materials — the same logic that carries our louvers and aluminum sunshades packages.
Quality Standards and Inspection
Aluminum quality is decided at three checkpoints, and FBM’s own inspection team covers all of them: material verification against mill certificates and section-dimension checks on first extrusions, in-line inspection of machining tolerances, weld dressing and folding accuracy during the run, and a final inspection covering anodic film or coating thickness readings, colour consistency across the batch against the approved sample, and protective packing before loading. Every stage is documented in photos and video for the client’s record, and finish-system certificates travel with the shipping documents. Colour-critical packages are finished in continuous batches so facade component 500 matches component 1.
Why Source Aluminum Fabrication Through FBM Sourcing
Aluminum fabrication rarely arrives as a standalone order — it is the supporting cast around windows, screens, ceilings and structure. As a building material sourcing agent we consolidate the custom fabrication with the project’s metal screens and the heavier scopes in our steel structures packages, run one finish standard across all of it, and charge a transparent 5–8% service fee on a scope we take full responsibility for — from die drawing to delivered, labelled metal.
