Switchable Smart Glass and PDLC Film Manufacturers in China for Hotel and Office Projects: Five Sourcing Routes

Blog,Product Selection Guide

Switchable smart glass manufacturers in China include glass processors that laminate a switchable film between two panes, makers of self-adhesive switchable film for fitting to existing glass, partition and shower enclosure makers that build the glass into a framed system, suppliers of the power units and controls that switch the glass, and general glass processors that buy in the film and laminate to order. In a hotel bathroom, a meeting room or a clinic, switchable glass changes from clear to obscured at the press of a switch, and the glass, the film, the wiring and the control are four different things. Each route supplies a different part of that system under the same name.

This guide sorts the supply side into five sourcing routes so a procurement team can send one brief to the right makers and compare the answers fairly. It is not a ranking. No factory is named or scored here, and no claim is made about the clarity, switching, safety or service life of any product. The designer, the electrical engineer and the local rules define those requirements, and each maker must show evidence for the exact product it offers. For related items, see our guides to glass, drywall and movable partitions and shower enclosure and shower door manufacturers.

What should a switchable glass brief state?

A brief that says only “smart glass, 120 m²” produces quotations that cannot be compared, because the make-up, the connection and the control are left open. State at least the following, copied from the elevations, the glazing schedule and the electrical drawings.

  • Item code and quantity: each panel type from the drawings, with sizes and the quantity per room type, so glass is priced against locations and not against a total area.
  • Glass make-up: the pane thicknesses, glass type and interlayer the specification states, written as the engineer writes them.
  • Laminated or film-applied: whether the switchable layer is laminated inside the glass or applied as a film to a pane.
  • Edges and holes: edge finish, notches, holes and cut-outs for hinges or fixings, as drawn.
  • Connection: the edge where the electrical connection leaves each panel, the cable length and how the connection is protected in the frame.
  • Power and control: the supply voltage and frequency of the destination, the power unit, the switch, remote or building control interface, and who supplies each.
  • Setting and frame: the frame, channel or patch fittings the panel sits in, and the clearance the connection needs.
  • Requirements the project names: any safety glazing, electrical or fire requirement, with its standard and edition, set by the engineer and the authority and not by the maker.
  • Packing: how panels are crated and marked by room, and which parts ship separately.

Five sourcing routes for switchable smart glass

1. Switchable laminated glass processors

These processors laminate a switchable film between two panes and cut, edge and drill the glass to the drawing. Ask for the make-up drawing, the edge and connection detail, the interlayer description, the processor’s own documents for the exact make-up and a finished sample with its power unit. This route suits new panels in partitions, bathroom walls and doors.

2. Self-adhesive switchable film makers

Film makers supply switchable film cut to size for fitting to glass on site or by a glazier. Ask for the film description, the adhesive and liner, the connection detail, the fitting instructions and a sample fitted to glass. This route suits refurbishment where the glass stays in place, and it moves part of the work to site.

3. Partition and shower enclosure system makers

System makers build switchable panels into framed partitions, doors or bathroom enclosures. Ask for the system drawing, the frame and hardware description, how the cable runs through the frame and the documents for the system as offered. See our guide to movable partition sourcing for framed systems.

4. Power unit and control suppliers

The glass switches only through a power unit and a control, which may come from the glass maker or from a separate electrical supplier. Ask for the power unit description, the input supply it is built for, the control options and the documents for the exact unit, and agree who connects it on site. See our guide to voltage and electrical standards for lighting and appliances from China.

5. General glass processors buying in film

General processors cut and laminate glass and buy in the switchable film from a film maker. Ask which film is used and who makes it, how the processor laminates and connects it, and request the documents in the name of the maker of each part.

How to compare switchable glass quotations

  • Make-up: pane thickness, glass type, interlayer and switchable layer stated for every panel.
  • Size and processing: cut size, edges, holes and cut-outs included for every panel.
  • Connection: connection position, cable length and edge protection described for every panel.
  • Power and control: power units, switches, remotes or interfaces listed with quantities and the supply they are built for.
  • Units of measure: price per panel or per square metre, and what a panel includes.
  • Evidence: which documents are offered for the exact make-up and the exact power unit, with the date and the body that issued them.
  • Exclusions and substitutions: any change of film, interlayer, glass or control the maker proposes.

A quotation that is cheaper on one line may be thinner on another. Read the descriptions side by side before reading the totals.

Planning the wiring before the glass is cut

Switchable glass is a glazing item and an electrical item at the same time, and the two trades may not work from the same drawing. Mark on the elevation where the connection leaves each panel and where the cable runs to the power unit, and confirm with the electrical engineer where the power units sit and how they are reached for service. Once the glass is cut and laminated the connection position cannot be moved, so this drawing should be signed before production.

Agree also who is responsible for the connection on site: the glazier who sets the panel, the electrician who wires the power unit, or both. Write the answer in the brief and in the order, so the panel and its power unit are treated as one item when they are checked on arrival.

Samples, approval and acceptance on delivery

Approve a finished sample panel with its power unit and control, switched on and off, before bulk production, and look at it in the light of the room where it will be installed. Record the approval in writing against the item code and keep the sample as the reference for the bulk order.

On delivery, check crates against the order: panel size, make-up, connection position, power units, controls and quantity per room. Note any damage or difference in writing on the day with photographs, so the maker can respond while the evidence is fresh. Before shipment our own team checks quantities, finish, labels and packing against the signed-off specification, and you receive a QC report with photos and video.

What evidence to ask each route for

Evidence should be requested for the exact make-up and the exact power unit, not for a product family. Ask for the following in writing and keep the answers with the quotation.

  • Laminated glass processors: the make-up drawing, the connection detail and the documents offered for the exact make-up.
  • Film makers: the film description, the fitting instructions and the documents offered for the exact film.
  • System makers: the system drawing and the documents for the system as offered, including the glass in it.
  • Power unit suppliers: the unit description, the supply it is built for and the documents for the exact unit.
  • General processors: the documents of the maker of each part, not the trader’s summary.

Specification gaps to close before quotation

A quotation cannot answer the questions below for itself. Check that the brief answers these questions before it goes out.

  • Which panels are laminated and which are film-applied?
  • Which make-up and safety glazing requirement does the specification state, in which standard and edition?
  • Where does each connection leave the panel, and where does each power unit sit?
  • Which supply voltage and control system does the building use?
  • Who connects the panels and power units on site?
  • How are crates marked by room, and what documents travel with them?

Next steps for a switchable glass package

Send each maker the same brief and ask for answers in writing, line by line, with samples or documents before bulk production. FBM Sourcing manages China procurement packages for overseas projects; furniture-only packages are also run through FBM Furniture.

Questions buyers ask about switchable smart glass from China

What is the difference between switchable laminated glass and switchable film?

In laminated glass the switchable layer is sealed between two panes at the factory. A film is applied to an existing pane, by the maker or on site. State which one the project wants, because quotations for the two are not comparable.

Who supplies the power unit and the switch?

Either the glass maker or a separate electrical supplier. Put each power unit and control on its own line with the supply it is built for, and agree who connects it on site.

Can switchable glass go into a shower or another wet area?

That depends on the exact product, its connection and how it is installed. Ask the maker for its instructions and documents for wet-area use of the exact make-up, and let the designer and the engineer decide.

Do we need a sample before ordering?

Yes. Approve a finished panel with its power unit, switched on and off in the light of the room, and keep it as the reference for the bulk order.
